The short version of my question is this. When activating independent voice playback with a playback template that uses the Aria multi VST, why does Dorico add more instances of Aria and assign each voice to a different instance of Aria?
The longer version. I’m changing a large number of organ pieces from noteperformer to Aria so I can get playback that better represents the stops the music calls for. I’ve created an endpoint configuration with sufficient organ stops to get me started for most pieces I want to apply the Aria playback template to. I also saved a playback template that uses that endpoint configuration. (Independent voice playback was not on when creating those). Once I’ve changed the appropriate notes in the score to different voices so I can have different sounds in playback I then turn on independent voice playback. This is where it gets interesting. Dorico adds multiple instances of the Aria multi player when I only need one. This adds lots of extra work including removing the extra vst instances, assigning each voice to the aria player and assigning which channel to use. At one point when working on creating the endpoint configuration Dorico would add multiple vst instances every time I opened the project (even when I had made no changes). I believe I ended up with 18 different instances. I think I’ve fixed that problem. I’m wondering if it would better to create a playback template with several instances of Aria, one for each voice? Or would I save time by manually setting up playback per title? If Organteq ever goes on sale I might jump ship and use it.
Thanks for the links. I’m still not sure why the problem I’m having is happening. I did search and read through many threads on independent playback but still am a bit confused. I will try the idea of manually editing the endpoint configuration and see if that works. If I’m reading the threads correctly it appears this is a known issue that hasn’t been fixed in three or so years.
IVP doesn’t work with playback templates when using a multi. Yes it’s been a known problem for several years.
Your choices are:
1: don’t use IVP.
2: don’t use a multi
3: work around editing the endpoint xml file
4: use project templates instead of playback templates. These seem to work for reasons I don’t understand. Probably has something to do with project templates are not algorithmic and playback templates are algorithmic.
Maybe someone could talk the Dorico team to provide a mechanism using the project template mechanism in the playback template function. Because as far as I’m concerned, if I’m using a multi like VE Pro, I don’t really care about fall back instruments and such. Everything is in the VE Pro template and can be static like it is for project templates.
I’ve no idea if they will ever fix this problem. I’m not holding my breath anymore. Steinberg has not commented on this issue for quite some time.
I got a bit confused in the threads you mentioned because of all the references to “IRV” instead of IVP. I’m leaning toward editing the endpoint xml file. In the future, a project template is the way to go but I’m trying to change the playback to about 150 existing organ titles I have. I like the Aria sounds a bit better than the Noteperformer sounds and both of those are a bit easier to work with than some Soundiron and Spitfire libraries I have. Thanks.
