Input playback has gone silent

My plackback when inputting notes has gone silent, and I don’t know what I did. It plays when I select and change the pitch of already written notes, and it plays when pressing play. But not when writing new notes.

I’m working in Dorico 6 now, but it happened the day before yesterday before I updated. And it won’t play in Dorico 5 either. So it’s something that happened (or I did wrong) in v5 and then got inherited to v6. Any ideas?

I have checked Preferences/Note input and Editing/Auditioning/Play notes during input and selection. It plays when selecting notes, but not during input. I have restarted both the app and the computer.

Please do following:

  • Create a new project from piano template
  • Enter some arbitrary notes
  • From the menu choose Help > Create Diagnostic Report and post the corresponding zip file here

thank you for the data. Unfortunately I can’t find anything relevant in there.
Just to confirm, you are using the computer keyboard to input notes, right?
You don’t use a MIDI-keyboard for note input, also right, yes?
Because Dorico does not recognize any MIDI device in your case.

But maybe my dear colleague @dspreadbury can find something in the diagnostics…

Exactly, I never use a MIDI-keyboard (it messes with my work-in-the-couch concept :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: )
I’m using the computer keyboard. Pitch first, note value second.

Daniel, try activating Play shadow note pitch and Play changes of shadow note pitch in pitch before duration input on the Note Input and Editing page of Preferences. Both of those options appear to be deactivated in your saved preferences.

Sorry, that doesn’t give me what I want (and had before the other day). Now the notes plays when changing pitch, but still not when entering the note. And I just want the note to play when entering it, not when changing the shadow note :slight_smile:
So they are deactivated by choice! The problem is that I have activated “Play notes during input and selection”, but that Dorico only play the notes during selection but not input, even though it’s the same alternative.

I’m afraid I’m at a loss, then.

I would do following then:

  • In Finder navigate to /Users/[your name]/ Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6
  • Rename the file preferences.xml to preferences_backup.xml
  • Start Dorico and see how it behaves.
    Because you renamed the preferences.xml file Dorico will create a new one with all factory default values. If with the factory default values notes do play during input as you expect, then you can compare the new xml file and the backup file with each other and work out which setting is responsible for the unwanted behaviour. It is a tedious labour, but worth it in the end, I think.
