Inputting dotted notes with MIDI keyboard

Inputting dotted notes with a MIDI keyboard: I’m in 9/8 and I’m doing pitch before duration (former Finale user…); I quick double press 7 (number pad), but Dorico chooses to create two half notes instead of a dotted half (which kind of makes sense now that I write it…). Is this not possible using pitch before duration? Another way of asking this: What is the fastest way to input dotted notes using pitch before duration with a MIDI keyboard? Thanks.

If you’re using duration as the trigger to enter a note, then you can’t use double-tap to enter a dotted note, as you point out, because that just enters two notes.

You can enter a dot by pressing period. You may want to see whether this setting in Dorico’s Preferences works better one way or the other.

As a former Finale user, I used to use Pitch AFTER duration (Simple rather than Speedy). If you’re doing a run of equal notes, then surely Pitch BEFORE is twice as many key presses?
