Insert Warning - request

It has been requested, and I’m requesting again that the Insert button be orange, flashing or somehow eye-catching. It’s too easy to inadvertently type I, then wreak havoc on the score. Undo is a solution, but even then, it can be a little dicey, as one is never sure how long one has been inserting.

You know that the caret changes for insert mode, right?

I understand the issue, and I do understand that the caret changes its look. However, I press enter and look down to my midi keyboard and computer keyboard, and most likely the score from which I am reading. So it is easy for me to miss this, and it has bit me a time or two.

Perhaps an idea would be instead of the just the caret changing slightly, there is is an amount of space highlighted behind (to the right) of the caret which is the same color of the caret. For example, insert is on and there is a translucent “insert box” that appears that is about 5 spaces wide, that is the same color as the caret. I think if a box of color displayed, one would be slightly more aware that something is on when moving one’s head at fast speeds between up and down. Just a thought.

Yes, but I still miss it as I’m focused on something else. If most people don’t have this problem, I’ll chuck it up to I need to be a better person, LOL.

There is a setting in the remote control api that causes your hands to glow neon orange- it requires VR glasses though, or possibly a couple of glasses of an adult beverage.

Seriously, I support the concern - but I don’t think I’ve read anything yet that would stop some of my mistakes. Looking at a piano keyboard/source material especially.

I have been thinking a Yamaha keyboard designed specifically to work with Dorico might be interesting. I was noticing some apps to record your practice time, that some of them work with a digital piano for feedback on dynamics quality, areas of practice… so perhaps a keyboard specific for composers could have workflow and feedback features. Orange keys in insert mode :woman_shrugging:

I’ve simply removed that key command so I have to physically go click on the Insert icon for the rare times I actually want to use Insert. It eliminates the possibility of accidentally triggering it when I intend to hit O for Force Duration or something.

Yes Please! I’m currently working on a new piece and it’s happened to me several times already this week. Yes the caret changes, but that’s only good if you are adding new notes. I’ve had Insert left on inadvertently from a prior operation and there is no indication it’s on (unless I look at the left panel) if one goes ahead and copies a part of a measure and hits R, or uses option-shift-arrow to extend the duration of a note or chord, etc. It’s easy to undo if I catch it, but I’ve also seen it where I have not caught it for a bit and now downstream tuplets are all. messed up (5:4 becomes 21:15 or some other weird rhythm). Thanks.

I don’t use the key command but always click the icon, yet it’s also an issue for me as noted above. It’s the fact that it’s invoked that is the issue, not how one gets there.

I agree with this. Mistakenly using Insert mode can have a drastic effect on the score and can be a nuisance to correct. Perhaps an option for a flashing caret in insert mode might do.

Make it audible - like the sound from a truck when going in reverse. Sure the “beep-beep-beep” is annoying, but so is undoing the mess made if you don’t turn Insert off. Choose your poison…
