Is it possible to insert an existing backing tracks into cubase if I want to use it as a main track to build on? I was told by the person where I purchased it, that it could be done but he had no idea how to do it.

The short answer here is that Cubase will be able to import audio, midi and video files into your project.
If you want specific advice, you will need to provide more details.
For a starting point, look in the file menu > Import
Also, the Operation Manual can be downloaded separately for your perusal, which I would strongly recommend.
