How do I insert grace notes as shown in this example? When I try, the adjacent notes change.

Start note input on the D (assuming treble clef)
Hit the / to start grace note input… Enter the notes as usual.
In properties you set them to be before the barline.

That works. Thank you.
(For some reason, the main note often changes to a rest when I switch to grace note mode. Not a big deal, but strange.)
I think you should recognize the solution to Janus, Niels

That will happen if all you do before pressing the / key (for grace note input) is to select the note.
What you need to do first is to activate the caret. This can be done either by selecting the note and pressing shift + N or by double-clicking on the note.
Then press the / key.
