Install Loops & Samples

Why do loops and samples that are already installed in Cubase show up as “not installed” in Steinberg Download Assistant?

The “installation state” of applications and libraries content is stored in the SDA_downloads.json file as discussed in this post regarding macOS:

On macOS, direct removal of the installation files from Finder post-install does not alter the “installation state” of the associated product stored in that json file. If, however, you use the “Delete installation media” function inside SDA, it does. I’ve seen reports by Windows users that “direct” deletion does alter the installation state shown in SDA, though I don’t see how. I can’t validate that.

One should note that there are other ways of installing content outside of SDA (direct HTTP download, copying files from one system/drive to another, etc.) which obviously would not be monitored by the SDA. The above link actually outlines a process where I wiped another studio system and simply copied all the library files over, including the json file so that my Download Assistant at least indicated I’d downloaded them.

That said, and because of the various installation methods available, using the SDA as the source for what libraries and samples you have installed isn’t necessarily reliable. I suggest you use your Library Manager for that since it does indeed know what you have installed.

That may be too much information for your question, but just identifying there IS a way to update your SDA download state if it really bothers you, though I wouldn’t try it on a library-by-library basis. I think the general guidance is to just use the SLM as the “source of truth” for what libraries you’ve got installed.

Thank you, I thought it was a bug or that I needed to update.
