I am short on disk space and the installation program insists on installing it on my MacOS disk only.
is there any chance to move it (or most of the content) to an external disk?

As any application on Mac, you can move the application to any place afterwords. Unfortunately you cannot say to install it to other disc.
But, Cubase.app is not the biggest part. The biggest is the library. So you can install just Cubase without the library. Then you can drag and drop the library to the external drive manually and make the aliases to the expected system folder.
