I’m writing a percussion ensemble piece where each player is mostly on single line instruments. Sometimes in the parts the instrument changes just don’t show up, so there would be no way for the player to know what they are playing. Short of adding in the instrument with shift-x as text, is there any way to force an instrument relabeling?
I don’t think this is possible but you could show the Staff Labels for those systems instead?
But that would look really random and is not what I’m going for (and not what Behind Bars Suggests, for whatever that’s worth.) So it seems like my best option is to manually input the name of instruments when this error comes up?

Maybe - depends on who you ask, I guess.
That’s fair enough.
I think you will have to input them manually, yes.
The situation a R is you have a single player playing two instruments simultaneously. I’d guess this is an edge case for handling instrument changes. What would the instrument change notice say?
Ah, that makes sense. So one would say P. Blow E the other would say “Snare Drum”
But I think the ability to drop in the name of the instrument when desired would be useful for a multitude of situations.
Instead of using text, another way would be to use Percussion legends (for sounding instruments), selecting the note > right click > Percussion. A signpost will appear (because you are not in a 5-lines staff or grid visualisation), but you can give the signpost a custom name, and the name will appear, it is discrete but clear:
You can even set the Percussion Legend paragraph style the same as Instrument Change Labels (but of course this would be very similar as adding a staff text with he same PS
):
This looks really great, I’ll give this a shot tomorrow.
