Hi Folks,
I’m new to Dorico and had to begin with a large composition due to a commission. On my score, I have an instrument (Bb Trumpet 1) that is visible on the score, plays in playback, but is missing from the parts window. The Dorico terminology is not clear to me regarding how I can fix this problem so I can see and print the part. I’ve added a couple of screenshots to show my problem. In Setup mode, you need to add a new part layout (right hand panel). While that layout is selected (bright blue), make sure the check boxes for the player (left panel) and flows (bottom panel) are ticked.
Thanks for your fast reply! After starting with Finale 1.0 many, many years ago, I am having trouble getting the hang of Dorico. I think I did what you suggested, but the Trumpet 1 part is still not showing up. I may be misunderstanding which boxes to check and where they are found.
Here’s what I’ve done and the result. I’m not sure about the bottom panel (Flows?). I did check that box as well.
Your screenshots only show the left side of the screen. The layouts (parts and score) are listed on the right.
Here’s a picture showing a brass quintet with three movements (flows), to which I’ve added a flute (on the left). In real life, when I add the flute player, Dorico would already add the layout (on the right), but I’ve deleted it for now.
Now I click the Add Instrumental Part Layout button in the lower right, and I get a new empty part layout .
Notice how that new layout is bright blue, because it’s selected. The boxes for the 3 flows (on the bottom) are already ticked, but to make this a flute layout I need to tick the box next to the flute player (on the left).
If you haven’t done it already, the Dorico First Steps Guide is a good way to start finding your way around.
And this section in the manual explains a lot of Dorico-specific terminology.
As I indicated in my previous reply, find the layout in the right panel that says Empty Part and select it, so it turns bright blue. Then make sure the boxes for your flow (on the bottom) and the trumpet player (on the left) are ticked.
OK - now I understand. I jumped into Dorico too quickly (3 week deadline to complete a 7 minute orchestra piece with score and parts) and I skimmed more than read the documentation. I learned a lot inputting the music and looking at snippets of Youtube lessons. The missing Trumpet 1 part is now added to the parts. I now have time to actually learn Dorico. Thanks for your help!!
