Instrument names in XML-imported scores from Sibelius (NOT Finale)

Dear collective wisdom,

when importing an orchestral score from a Sibelius exported XML file, the instrument names in the score appear to be impossible to change in the slightest. Changing the names in the setup mode does not change anything, even “reset” anything under “Edit” or right clicking them does not help. Neither does the properties panel, they do not show any properties at all. They appear to not even be there. I can select them, but that’s it.

I was told that this is a well known XML import problem having something to do with overrides, any yet all suggested solutions appear to do exactly nothing.

What am I missing?

Welcome to the forum.

Are you wanting to change Player names or Instrument names? Both are done in Setup.

For Players, just double click the blue player tab.

For Instruments, open the player tab (click the arrow >), then open the submenu (click the 3 dots …) and choose Edit Names…

Whether Player names or Instrument names show in your score will depend on what you choose in Layout Options>Staves & Systems>Staff Labels (by default it is Instrument names)

Thank you very much, that did the trick. I kind of feel silly for not considering the difference between player names and instrument names. Awesome!

It makes more sense when you realise that a Player may hold more than one instrument (eg Flute doubling Piccolo) - a concept that is alien to Sibelius.

You can just double-click on the Staff Labels now to edit them directly.
