I’d like to have 4 percussion lines in my score, each with a 5 line staff and displaying the instrument name instead of the player’s name.
If I assign separate instruments - not in a kit - to the player, I get the proper name in the score like it shows in the second picture. In this case I don’t get the option in Layout Options to have a 5 line staff.
So I combined the instruments into a kit - I select the 5 line staff in layout options - but then the instrument names disappear. Under staff labels “show players name…” the percussion players are unchecked.
In that case, setup your players and instruments like in your first screenshot. Then, in Setup mode go to Edit Instrument Definition via the ... menu. In the Staves and Clefs section, set the number of staff lines to 5. You have to do that for each individual instrument.
Thank you so much, I tried that - the problem is that bass drum and snare end up being in a different place from the conventional notation, and in general couldn’t find a way to customize the position in te 5 line staff. I tried in the instrument library, but nothing happened.
I’ve run into that myself, I don’t quite understand why Dorico won’t allow you to edit the staff position of non-pitched percussion instruments on a 5 line staff if they’re not in a kit. I just can’t see any logic in that (so I’m hoping someone can tell me I’m wrong ).
For the Bass Drum ans Sus Cymbal players in your example, you can work around this by assinging a kit to that player that only contains the BD/Sus Cym (then use layout options to set it to 5 line).
For your Anvil & Tam-tam and Snare Drum & Tom-tom players, you can probably get what you want by assigning multiple kits to one player, each kit containing just one instrument. You can assign multiple kits to one player by choosing Create empty kit after you’ve created the first one (adding a new instrument first and then choosing Combine into kit will add it to the existing kit).
You can then determine the staffline position of each instrument in the Kit editor. Make sure to use ...>Edit Names to assign the proper instrument names to each kit (I used full names instead of abbreviated in the example):
