Instrument part numbers in Arabic instead of Roman

Creating a new ensemble and Dorico defaults to Roman numerals in the score for numbering the parts, even if I change the name like this image

I can’t seem to find an option to change this so I can get something like this:

In Engraving Options > Staff Labels > Numbering there is a setting for single and section players.

thank you very much! I was searching for instrument and part, not staff

For your information as well, in your first screenshot: you had renamed the players, but not their instruments. That won’t affect staff labels, unless they’re set to show player names instead of instrument names in staff labels.

Also, your woodwinds are currently “section” players: this isn’t necessarily a problem, but usually in Dorico projects these are “single” players, so that they can double if necessary on eg Piccolo, Cor Anglais, or Bass Clarinet, etc (a “section” player represents a group of people who play the same instrument, like a Violin or Cello section in an orchestra, or a Tenor section in a choir – always assuming you can encourage more than one gentleman into your choir to sing tenor, that is!)

thanks, I deliberately wanted section players since this an arrangement for a concert band woodwind section, not individual players

That’s a logical choice, but unless you need to write either divisi for a section, or instrument switching for one player, I think there’s no practical difference between a single vs. section player, FYI.

Aren’t there different sounds samples for sections versus single players?

Typically, that would only be the case for string sections. Winds and Brass section players will still default to single player instrument patches with most playback templates (Halion, NotePerformer etc). You could, in theory, connect to an ensemble patch which is unison a2 or a3, if you have that available and you wanted that sound. But in your example, how many players are you imaginging to handle the parts? Connecting each staff to an a3 patch for example would result in a total of 6 flutes.

concert bands and marching bands usually have several players on each part
there must be some section patches available, if there aren’t the default in band templates
