I’ve got a harp part that is on five pages and would easily fit on four but I don’t know how to make Dorico reformat appropriately. I’ve tried to adjust spacing globally and manually and failed again and again. It was so easy in Finale - just select a few bars and move to previous system or move to previous page… Isn’t there something similar? I’ve tried the “make frames” option and ended up with a blank page in the middle of the parts and then I couldn’t populate that blank page at all.
Hi Barry,
your layout will have manual overrides - they are visible in Engrave Mode - at the little page icons to the right.
Do a Reset Layout first, then you’ll be able to let Dorico space out everything nicely.
(Your problem at the moment is, that you have already done manual shifting, thus hindering Dorico to do its work.)
Thanks KB,
I really appreciate the help.
I believe I had already done a reset layout and this is still the appearance. Maybe I have to reset several times to undo everything? I am wondering if there is a global limit to number of staves on a page or something that just needs to be adjusted somewhere?
I’m not sure I know what I page icon looks like, so maybe you could link to some good guidance on this?
I’ve got my view settings set to show everything, I think.
Barry
In Finale, whenever I shifted the staff spacing enough to make room for a new stave, it would automatically flow from the following page to fill up the void. It doesn’t appear that Dorico operates that way…

Barry, I don’t think it’s a good idea to show your email and phone. Spam bots and such.

You’re right that Dorico doesn’t work like Finale does, shifting staves manually in Dorico should really be a last resort. I’d recommend this recent webinar by John Barron where a lot of aspects regarding part layout are addressed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83a48mu-ikY
I think that might already cover a lot of your questions and hopefully makes things a lot clearer. Also I agree with @jesele that you should probably not post your email and phone number to prevent being spammed.
My guess: you probably selected a different layout for reset than the one you are having problems with.
The best option you have now is to post the project here. If you are concerned, post only a selection of it. But this will definitely help to solve the problem instantly.
Hi @Barry_Kroeker, besides the suggestions already given to reset the manual staff spacing for the whole layout close menu Engrave > Staff Spacing > Reset Layout:
That did help!
The webinar video of John Barron was incredibly helpful. I need to publicly say it - as a former long-time Finale user, I absolutely am LOVING my Dorico transition. I’m still stumbling along sometimes, but every time I have a question, I am excited to find the answer because I know I’m going to be amazed and delighted by the features of this software!
