Intel component in mac installation?

when I started my computer today I was greeted by this message:

latest Dorico on macmini M1, os 26.5

any ideas?

It’s the Download Assistant and Library manager that are still Intel. They’ll be updated in time, I’m sure. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Apple Doesn’t plan on removing Rosetta until MacOS 28, which will be next September (2027) at the earliest. They are just warning users so that they don’t fill forums with “Apple broke my apps”, and as an encouragement to developers who haven’t moved over.

As a long time Apple customer, I really wish they would leave things like Rosetta in place for Apple silicon so that the end user can decide whether to stop using it or not. It also seems to be a lot easier to port cross platform applications with Rosetta present. It wouldn’t seem prudent to alienate any developers at this point…just my 2 cents worth.

But, yes, as others have said, it’s the “2 minute warning”, so to speak, for developers.

as a long time Apple fan-boy… I wish they would stop updating the OS on a predefined schedule… what’s wrong with what we have now? what happened with the axiom “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”? So we’ll get more translucency (is this a word?) and more emojis (yay!) and get rid of useful stuff like Rosetta, to give developers something to do.

Oh, I agree. It’s a corporate income strategy, not a continuous quality improvement strategy. I will say, though, that the continued improvements and changes in OS security are really nice.

Yes but that doesn’t fit with their marketing strategy. Breaking the old stuff so you have to buy new stuff is how Apple (and most other tech manufacturers, to be fair) make their money…

Unfortunately, yes. The problem is that we have no guardrails, in general, for corporate behaviors or business ethics. It’s from the low tech world, but John Deere (the green tractor company) for years made it near impossible for anyone but a John Deere dealer to service their tractors and implements. Then a big class action suit ended with John Deere having to make available all documentation and devices needed for one to service their own tractors (I have two of those buggers a 2014 4045D and a 2019 4055E).

So, outside of guardrails and ethics, the only recourse is civil litigation. I suspect a class action suit against tech is unlikely because of the hunger they have created in the minds of young adults (maybe even younger) for new stuff as quickly as possible…and, daily, would be preferable. Instant gratification has its tradeoffs.

If you recall, it wasn’t terribly long ago that 32 bit machines were made obsolete by 64 bit machines for the most part. That was as much by design for profitability as it was for improving end user application speed and accuracy. Honestly, I’m not sure that we gained much of anything in the short term during that ordeal.

Maintaining two sets of libraries in the OS — one for 32-bit and one for 64-bit — is not a zero cost. Twice as much code to maintain, twice as difficult to fix bugs. Twice as difficult to add new features.

Mac hardware has been 64-bit for 20 years.

Sure, Apple could keep their current Macs supporting Intel code, and 32-bit code, and PPC code, and Motorola 68000, so that you could run every app ever made for the Mac since the 80s. But the OS would be 8 times the size, and would be riddled bugs, and progress would have slowed to a halt.

There’s plenty of features in each new release that developers can use for their apps. As soon as software uses those features, then it has to run on the OS that offers them.

Of course Apple is motivated by what is profitable, but the idea that they are sitting in grand modernist halls, stroking cats and saying “What can we break today?” is overplayed.

An operation system gets updated constantly, and there is a lot of work and effort spent to make the OS more secure, more efficient, at the same time laying out paths for future development, working on improved processors and hardware. We can’t imagine how huge of a task this is.
The translucent interface and other little gadgets are just there to keep the customers happy, interested and involved.

Now, really? I don’t dislike Apple as I joyfully moved from MS Windows 25 years ago and never looked back. I do believe that their strategic plan is always to make more money. Apple is also a very early adopter of new tech in computing which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it can be quite costly for the average enduser over time.

Your argument of “Twice as much code to maintain, twice as difficult to fix bugs. Twice as difficult to add new features.” holds about as much water as a rusted out bucket in my opinion. Emulators can be licensed independently to 3rd parties who by contractual relationship continue to keep them updated in terms of a new OS. In turn, customers can use what they have until they choose to upgrade to the latest and greatest, not when required by the OS.

Essentially banning these things by eliminating them from being able to interact with the OS is a different story altogether. Honestly, I would love to have an emulator that allows me to run some of my old MS DOS software that just didn’t break no matter how much one tried (just for fun, of course!). So, you believe what you want to believe and so will I. We will just have to agree to disagree and move forward.

True. Yet, I suspect those programmers cannot image how huge a task it is to compose, notate and engrave music as well. If what we do, day in and day out, is developing a certain part of OS operating code making adjustments for what others do with their little chunk, the work is really not likely to be more difficult than what we do but rather it simply uses a different fund of knowledge.

Most of us tend to believe that the complicated work of others is unbelievably difficult. What we forget is that for you or I, it would be an incredible undertaking but not necessarily for the ones who do that sort of thing every day. It’s also analogous to moving a large mound of dirt - we do it one bucket at a time and eventually that mound is gone. Or better yet, it is like writing a symphony…one note at a time.
