Inverse Fader Focus: Bring One Channel Forward by Lowering the Others

Inverse Fader Focus: Bring One Channel Forward by Lowering the Others

I would like to suggest a very direct mixing feature for Cubase.

Many times during mixing, when I want one channel to come forward, the best solution is not to raise that channel. A cleaner solution is often to lower the other channels slightly, so the focused channel becomes more present without increasing the overall level.

In large projects, with many tracks, this is not easy to do manually. Even using groups or VCA faders can interrupt the workflow, especially when I only need this adjustment for one quick moment.

My idea is a shortcut-based function directly on the fader. For example, I could hold Ctrl + Shift, click on the fader of the channel I want to focus, and drag upward as if I were raising that channel. But instead of raising that channel, Cubase would keep it at the same level and lower all the other audible channels very slightly.

So the selected channel would stay exactly where it is, while the rest of the mix would move down around it. This would make the selected channel come forward naturally, without pushing the master bus louder.

The movement should be very fine and smooth, not in large 1 dB steps. It should allow very small changes, like fractions of a dB, because in mixing sometimes a tiny movement is enough.

For me, this would work like an “Inverse Fader Focus”: I am not turning up the sound I want to hear. I am gently lowering the world around it.

Can’t you use the Listen feature for this?

Maybe it isn’t available in all the editions. Are you using Pro?

Yes, Listen is close in concept, but it is not the same thing. Listen is mainly a monitoring feature through Control Room. It lets me hear one channel more clearly while the rest of the mix is reduced in the background, but it does not actually perform a quick mix-level adjustment on the faders. What I am suggesting is a direct fader-based command: the clicked channel stays fixed, and the other channels are lowered slightly as an actual mix move.

Could the desired result be achieved by raising the volume level of one channel and then lowering the volume level on the output bus?
That would probably also introduce less problems with the overall sound of the mix in case you are using dynamics effects like compressors.

The idea is not meant to replace proper gain staging or solve compressor-related issues. It is simply for a very common mixing moment: all channels are already fairly loud, and I want one specific channel to gain a little more clarity, perhaps only 0.5 dB relative to the rest.

Of course, I could raise that channel and then lower the output bus. But the suggestion is a quick way to make that same relative balance change directly from the fader I am looking at in that moment: the selected channel stays where it is, while all the others are lowered very slightly.

Depending on routing and dynamics, the two approaches may not behave exactly the same. That is why I see this as an optional, direct workflow tool for very small balance adjustments.
