Hi. Wonder if anyone can help me. I use Dorico on iPad (alongside PC) but it crashes with larger projects and struggles with the better sound libraries. It’s a 2021 9th generation. I think 2MB - not sure if this (rather than having 4MB) is the main issue.
I want to use all the iPad features (Dorico 6 pro) so looking for a new machine. Don’t mind paying a bit more (including for future proofing), but I only use it for Dorico (maybe Cubase in the future) so don’t want to overspec unnecessarily.
Thanks for any advice.
Welcome.
As I understand it, Dorico should work fine, with the following observations:
- Dorico for iPad is only comparable to Dorico Elements on the desktop, even with the lifetime purchase or subscription.
- Only iPads with more than 4Gb of RAM can load Iconica Sketch.
- There does seem to be a crash with the latest release, if certain Accessibility options are switched on. I’m sure there will be an update to patch that, soon.
Any modern iPad that can buy today should be more than good enough. The current models are crazy powerful, with the same CPUs as Macs!
I have nothing but love and respect for the entire Dorico team led by Daniel. The way the programme is structured, how intuitive it is to use, and how new ideas are implemented has changed the way I make music. That’s why I didn’t hesitate to subscribe for the iPad version.
However, depending on how you intend to use Dorico, I cannot recommend it at this point in time. I even purchased an iPad Pro with an M4 processor specifically to use my SWAM instruments with it. The problems that make it unusable (some of which I could not know from the free version) for me are:
- Every time I start it up, I have to turn multicore processing off and on again in the settings. Perhaps it would help you to try that too.
- When entering chords with the on-screen keyboard, the keys get stuck and the programme has to be restarted.
- Using the interface with your finger is a nightmare. Just scrolling through the list of AU instruments doesn’t work. If you want to select a large area to edit, you can’t do so if it extends beyond the visible screen because scrolling deselects everything.
- The results sound fantastic to me. When I open a project that I created on my desktop, my expression maps open and I can use the SWAM instruments. I would love to show it here, but the export function does not work.
- Sometimes some instruments unload with all their settings or do not load at all.
In short, the time I spend on these issues seriously spoils my enjoyment of working with the software. Until the most important issues are resolved, I will continue to use my laptop.
Thanks very much both for the quick response and advice. Really useful.
I feel a little bad for interfering with your decision
. You may have other requirements that wouldn’t cause any problems with a new iPad. Judging by the relatively small number of complaints here in the forum, it seems that the majority of customers are satisfied.
Not at all! Appreciated you taking your time to share your experience!
