I recently started playing with some external mono synths, and created external instruments for them. The return channel is mono of course.
Since Cubase 13 it is possible to change the channel configuration for audio channels, does this apply to Instrument channels as well? if not, why not?
In the Audio Connections I can indeed create a stereo return, but that’s not what I want, as I can only connect either to the left or right channel, not both. My synth only has one output.
What I’m trying to understand is why my External Instrument has the mono/stereo toggle disabled and whether there is a reason for that.
Ultimately, what I want to acchieve, is to have my Mono return, but have the channel be Stereo so I can use stereo effects on it without having to send the signal to a different bus.
That’s the same idea behind Cubase’s 13 new feature “Quick channel configuration changes”
But that’s not enterely true.
If I create a mono Audio Channel for my Mic (which is routed to a mono return), I can swhitch the channel to stero by just clicking the toggle and using stereo plugins on it. That’s why the new mono/stereo toggle is so useful.
Inconsistencies like this are not entirely uncommon in Cubase, I’m afraid.
You could add the feature-request tag to the thread title.
In the meantime, I think you only have two option. Either route the track to a stereo bus, as @Martin.Jirsak suggests, or skip using External Instruments Tracks in favor or standard Audio Tracks.
