At the moment, I have exactly one set of speakers, and they are attached to the computer.
I have the Yamaha ASIO driver installed and I have it as the Line In default. When I tap on a key the little meter shows green for recognizing sound input. So far as I know all that’s working. I have also clicked the “Listen to this device” checkbox in the advanced sound settings and I could hear the keyboard as I played it. However, my understanding is that this is not the optimal way to go about it, and I’m unable to hear anything I play back anything I record this way in Cubase in any case.
When I choose the Generic Low Latency Driver driver in Cubase, the MODX M line in device is not seen for Input, but the speakers are seen for output. A webcam is seen for input, but that doesn’t help me. I removed that and rebooted and now nothing is seen.
When I choose Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO (or something to that effect), the MODX M line in is now seen for Input, but now the speakers are no longer recognized under Output.
Does anyone have any idea what I should be doing to get both the keyboard to show up in the Input AND the speakers to show up in the Output?
Since you mentioned an ASIO driver, I assume you are using Windows.
The problem here is only one ASIO driver can be loaded at a time, and the MODX M is an input-only device. It doesn’t help that Windows doesn’t have built-in support for aggregate audio devices.
The usual way around this is to use a dedicated audio interface which is itself connected to your speakers. The analog IO from the MODX is sent into the inputs on the audio interface, and then the audio interface is connected to your speakers (assuming you’re not talking about laptop speakers here).
Another thing you can try is to use ASIO4All. This is similar to the generic driver in Cubase, but has support for aggregating devices, at the sacrifice of some audio latency. You will be restricted to the highest latency device you’re using, which is likely your speakers (I’m guessing these are connected to the on-board audio on your PC).

Turns out I needed to use Steinberg Built-in ASIO driver. Nothing else would show that I even had speakers. I’ve been exploring from here and finally figured out how to lay tracks using the Montage sound engine on the keyboard and hear each track rather than just one.
It’s so whacky. Need an audio track to monitor or I hear nothing. Need to disable keyboard control on the MODX M. Anyway, finally got it to work and I’m deep in the learning process just making sounds and confirming they can be heard, not trying to play or compose anything yet.
