I’ve been trying to render in place from midi tracks using external instrument with no success.
Would I need to do the midi to audio routing that I have seen Greg ondo explaining online for all separate midi tracks in order to create audio from midi.
Thanks
I thought you could do it but you need to have an audio input into your audio interface for each external instrument and it would be in real-time.
I have just used this functionality the other day. Works fine.
When you want to record anything that sits outside of the computer you need to record it in real time onto an audio track. An External Instrument in Cubase is simply a definition, which audio inputs (and if you like which MIDI port) to use when using the instrument.
That’s good to know Johnny, I will watch the routing video again , I have 16 tracks to set which I fancy is going to a takeaway while to set up lol.
As I was saying to Johnny I’ve got 16 midi tracks to set up routing for so that is going to take bit of getting my head around.
Maybe after I’ve got it all set up I can save a template for further recordings
Another option is.
I’m using an arranger keyboard so I might just set up all the mudi file volumes, reverbs, pans on that and do a stereo audio recording,
Either way it’s not going to be a Grammy award production that’s for sure
If you think about it midi is just a set of instructions. So you send those instructions to the external instrument. The instrument has to output the audio which you record into Cubase as an audio track.
I think the render in place on vsti’s has confused a few people. In the past midi and audio were very separate. Cubase was originally a midi sequencer only so it was easier to understand the difference.
The only drawback with creating external instruments in Cubase is it ties up the audio interface inputs. Not great if you want to use them for other things.
Thanks for your advice much appreciated
