Sure thing, send me a PM with your email address and I’ll send you the template. But, do you have Vienna Ensemble Pro? Otherwise nothing will load up…
Thanks a lot ! Yes I have it here!
Has anyone experimented with 8dio/Soundpaint horns in Dorico? Expression mapping etc?
Do you have Atomic Bigband? Do you like it?
Tried the new Atomic Big Band playback template yesterday. Takes a bit of work to set up so make sure to follow the instruction video carefully but once it’s done it works like a charm and sounds really good. I hope they also add their other libraries to it eventually.
If it is not to much I ask, can you give an audio example here on the forum and let us know how much work it was to get the result?
There is no work involved. The setup-process once takes maybe 10 minutes and then you just press play and it interprets everything itself. See the video above and also here:
It is really very straight forward.
This is Ryan from Straight Ahead Samples My answer would be biased, but please do ask any questions, You can see a full demo at the end here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6l5lvEj0Xw4&t=1410s
@ryan3 can you tell me if I use smart delay do I have also a delayed sound when inputting notes?
Second: the demo of the Basie song is really only Dorico and the steps described before? I mean no extra tweaking in a DAW. Sorry I’m a bit suspicious, but that is because I spent a lot of money on samples I never use.
Third: when I apply the playback template to a score with for example 3 horns will they blend well? Trumpet, alto and tenor sax. Is it possible to get a sample of that?
@ryan3 a quick question, looking at this thread, it looks like the Smart Delay still means you can use other sample libraries for the rest of the sounds (rhythm section), right?
I am interested in The Atomic Big band, then add in Pianoteq, etc.
Are you able to say when the sale will finish?
(I have not been able to view the YouTube videos completely yet)
Thanks
If you have Smart Delay on and your settings in Dorico to playback notes on entry, then yes, they will be delayed. If you like hearing notes on entry, then you can simply have Smart Delay toggled off while entering notes and they will play in real-time per usual.
There is no DAW additional tweaking to the Basie Demo, what you hear is a direct screencast of playback in Dorico.
A score with just one trumpet, alto and tenor sax will sound excellent, I’ll save and description or confirmation of what “blending” sounds like to you, but it should sound great. There is a Lite version for half the price if thats mostly what you are interested in doing.
One of the beauties of Dorico is that you can always mix and match sounds from any sample library on any project. After you apply the template, you would load which additional instruments/VSTs you want in the play view and direct the parts to them. The template also includes the expression maps for each ABB instrument which you can export to your other projects/templates and apply or create you own PT.
Hi Ryan! I had several big band commissions due by June 1, so I figured I’d give Atomic a try. The initial application of the Playback Template unfortunately wasn’t so smooth. Applying the Playback Template changed my Font Styles / Default Text Font to Finale Jazz Text! I’m not 100% why that is happening since I thought that font issue was resolved several versions ago. (See this thread from Dec. 2020.) Was the template created using an older version of Dorico or something? In any case, this seems bad because a) users are not expecting a Playback Template to change fonts, b) the numbers in Finale Jazz Text are particularly illegible (it’s really just about the worst of the “handcopied” fonts IMO), and c) this is a Dorico Playback Template so it seems pretty odd to default to a competitor’s fonts.
I configured Kontakt 7 the way described in the PDF, and everything looks installed correctly according to Native Access, but applying the PT resulted in this, where it didn’t actually connect to Kontakt:
The Expression Maps looked useful though, so rather than bother with troubleshooting further, I bailed on the Playback Template, created my own VEPro instance with Atomic, and just used the Expression Maps with that. I just wanted to let you know, there were definitely issues with the Playback Template setup on my Win11 system anyway. I’d be curious if it worked correctly for other users.
What’s the default keyswitch for Smart Delay in the Trumpets? Is it C-2? There is something in the Atomic Trumpet expression map that is turning Smart Delay off in the middle of playback which obviously means everything is out of sync and not usable if using Smart Delay in other instruments. I think there might be a mistake in the Marcato assignment where it is set to C-2, but perhaps it’s something else. In any case, I just wanted to let you know the Atomic Trumpet map as currently provided isn’t really usable as clearly there’s a bug somewhere in there.
It’s interesting to know that AC are growing up their library, now they come to release the VWinds Flutes beside VWinds Clarinets and VWinds Double Reeds.
feels like the wrong emoji to respond to your post, @FredGUnn . What I need is , or maybe !
I was contemplating picking up ATB, but am thinking that perhaps I should hold off…
Some aspects of it are quite good! There just are some kinks that still need to be worked out. There’s another bug in the Atomic Trombone expression map that sometimes causes held notes to be cut off, but I haven’t sleuthed out what is causing that. It doesn’t occur with the “Default” Dorico expression map though. It doesn’t seem to matter whether Smart Delay is turned on or not.
From the sound perspective, I sorta hate the Lead Alto. It sounds like a high school kid who doesn’t know how to use diaphragm support so all the upper register is strained and a bit flat. I already had their “Art of the Alto” library so I used it for lead alto when experimenting. The Lead Trumpet is compressed sounding and not as colorful as a real lead player. I think I improved it somewhat with some EQ. Bass Trombone is way underbalanced, and doesn’t match the levels of a real player so it obviously needs to be bumped up in the mix. I made a bunch of other tweaks in the VEPro instance too.
The “Non-Smart Delay Track Sync” plug-in is wonderful! It accounts for tempo so you can now have tempo changes. Previously when using a Delay at a fixed amount (or negative amount) you couldn’t accommodate tempo changes and now you can. It still would be nice if the developers would allow an offset for the green playback bar so it could be synced too.
Here’s an ensemble section, melody out, and tag for an arrangement I just finished on On the Sunny Side of the Street. I used a Vibes sound for the vocalist as it has a stronger attack, but that will be a vocalist when it’s performed. Horns are all Atomic with the changes I mentioned above. The falls, bends, etc. all seem to work. I didn’t bother with drum playback and the rest of the rhythm section is only playing back when they have written notes, so obviously not playing when they have slashes. Vocalist will be filling over the ending vamp too.
Is that happy tune your step…?
I’d be curious to hear any horn-section samples you’ve done with VHorns. I was really impressed with its sound in the solo Cannonball example you shared recently.
Heh, when they all play in perfect time like that, who needs drums?
Here’s the same thing swapping in VHorns. I never did get around to making comprehensive expression maps for them, so falls and stuff aren’t working in it. Balance is off somewhat as I didn’t bother adjusting it.
There’s definitely a drummer on the gig though! (This one will be played next month at Carnegie Hall.) Since I usually don’t care about drum playback, I just write the drum part so it has what the player needs to see, and ignore the playback aspect of it, as usually that would mean writing another part.
