Is there a manual?

Very good point but speaking as one who lives on the wet and windy Isle of Skye, an iPhone is about as much use here as a chocolate teapot, unless you never go outside, or keep it in a drybag!

Not sure how one would fare if you tried to read a .pdf in the bath on it

I never got a manual with C5, so just printed out the sections that were vastly different in C6 and interleaved it with my home made C5 manual. Worked like a dream.

There are toilet proof cases for the ipad. Seriously, i see so many ipads with people coming in to record. I am looking for an easy way to get there notes off them and on to my rig… without installing iTunes! Been temporarily using a Google account but there has to be an easier way.

Hard copy manuals are very rare these days. If steinberg issued addendums to the existing manual with page replacement locations, that would be cool. Having the manual printed, iirc for it was a few years ago, wasn’t that bad. I punched the thing myself and put it into a binder. It did get a lot of use… the times are indeed different. Time to get a tablet I think, perhaps a (blush) ipad. A lot of people’s life’s are loaded on them.

That surely would be the way forward for those who still like a paper manual.

And are you suggesting the Isle of Skye is a toilet? yes a waterproof phone or case is essential, especially when one works as a mountaineering guide in one’s ā€œotherā€ life

It should be a cost-extra option. All the usual suspects will be soon publishing their Cubase 6 how-to guides, but none cover Cubase quite like Steinberg does. So I printed it today and at 700+ pages, it is a beast but I need to get away from terminals, laptops and iPads. Paper = good. Soothing.

Do you do mountaineering?

Indeed I do. It’s the hobby that became my job when I more or less retired from the professional music ā€œrat raceā€.

Back on topic, I’m really taken with the idea of the ā€œmodular manualā€. It might be a pain to write though, could see it needing a lot of editing for referencing etc. But having said that, I’m sure the existing manual isn’t re-written from scratch every time.

I find the lack of a printed manual appalling. I’m glad I got C5 (my first edition) while they were still printing them.

I use both the manual and the pdf because they’re both useful in different ways. If you’re searching for a specific word or phrase, the pdf rocks. But for an overall picture and basic learning, nothing, but nothing beats a printed manual. Studies have shown comprehension is much better using printed material than electronically formed images.

For those who are calling the new electronic pads the ā€œwave of the futureā€ and ā€œlearn to adaptā€, you’re drinking the Kool-Aid man. Why don’t you just toss all your hardware synths into the dumpster while you’re at it and go all soft synths. Or maybe you already have.

And for those who call it ā€œkilling treesā€ give me a break. Tell that to the tree farmers who make their living carefully planting and raising trees every 15 years for the paper industry (like some in my family).

Sure I could print it out (and maybe will), but nothing beats a real offset press printed manual on coated paper. I’d easily pay Steinberg $35 USD + shipping if they’d have them printed up. Make it spiral bound while you’re at it so it sits flat on the music stand when you open it up.

I support the need for a printed manual. Imagine a new user, who just bought Cubase 6, and never used Cubase before, with no manual ! Wouldn’t you be shocked to spend Ā£500 on something and then get no manual?

You cannot have Cubase up on the screen whilst learning features, when you have the pdf on the screen.

There is going to be a lot of features in Cubase 6 that people are never going to know about, because there is no printed manual to read.
I often read (printed) manuals of things I have when away from the computer, and learn and recall features I forgot were there - or realise there is an easier way to do something.

So yes, Steinberg, we need a printed manual, and on a £500 program, we do expect it to be included free.

I would like a printed manual as well. I’ll be upgrading to 6 soonish, and coming from 5 essential there’ll be a lot of new stuff for me I would probably miss without a proper manual.

But perhaps not within the upgrade price?

Anyway, I don’t think it’s going to happen … Wavelab 7 doesn’t even have a manual at all - not even a pdf - just the program’s help text in pdf form, as I understand it.

How much did it cost those who’ve had it printed at a bureau?

I wonder if there’d be a discount available for getting (eg) 20 or 50 printed - eg if there are enough people wanting it who live near enough together.

Would it be legal for a music shop to sell printed copies? - just recover the printing costs - a way to attract potential customers into the shop?

If you are serious, start another thread to get a count of how many people want a printed manual.
I do work for a printer that prints and binds books. He will most likely do it for a very reasonable price. I need a quantity of copies in order to get bulk pricing.

I am in the U.S. I suppose overseas shipping would have to be figured out for those not in the U.S. to make sure it is within everyone’s reach $$$. I don’t mind doing this and shipping the books if someone does a little leg-work with quantity and estimated shipping costs. They will be shipped from West Chester, PA 19380.
