Is there a Modifier, for "F" keypress, when autoscroll is suspended?

I would like a modifier, to be able to switch Autoscroll off completely, not back on when it is suspended, e.g., by clicking on a blank area, in the Key Editor page.

How it works now, it restarts Autoscroll and takes you to wherever the project cursor is and that is not always (never actually) what I would like to happen, so a modifier would really help.

Hi,

Once you switch the Auto-Scroll Off, it never does become On or Suspended by itself. You can also disable the Suspend Auto-Scroll when Editing option in the Select Auto-Scroll Settings drop-down menu.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for your reply.

I believe I may be requesting a new feature or “modification” of an existing feature.

Autoscroll suspend is a great feature, since it was created but over time it has become just as much of a hassle as it was before the feature was created so I hope SB will agree.

Best regards

Hi,

Could you please describe your use case?

I use Autoscroll on small sections of a song to traverse parts of a project and then I click in the empty space of the Key Editor to suspend it and since it often restarts randomly or for no apparent reason, I then need to turn it off but clicking on the Autoscroll icon simply turns it back on, rather than off which is not what I want, and pressing “F” does the same thing, which is again not at all what I need to happen.

The problem is, if the project cursor is towards the right of the display, the next section of the project is brought into focus, which is not desired behavior since the previous section disappears and is no longer in focus so I must scroll back horizontally.

Hi,

I believe, if you disable the Suspend Auto-Scroll when Editing option, you get what you need.

Hi Martin,

Is that a preference or does that revert to the original behavior before Autoscroll suspend was implemented in Cubase and Nuendo?

Regards

Hi,

This is kind of preference.

Hello,

I think the feature needs some work because it is in a word unworkable, as its’ behaviour appears to be quite random and it is in effect, a genuine annoyance, since even before it was improved, with the suspend function.

The issue is, once suspended it should simply stay suspended, that is the first requirement that needs to be met for someone composing music.

It should not for whatever reason switch itself back on as if it is some kind of help, when in reality it is just a plain hindrance so I hope SB can do something about this within the currrent product cycle since I doubt I’d be the only one who can see what is happening.

Cheers

Hi,

Do you have a step by step repro, when it switches from Suspend to another (what) state by itself, please?

  • Set Cycle Markers to given points
  • Select MIDI parts to be edited
  • Open Key Editor
  • Start sequencer
  • Click in empty space to suspend Autoscroll
  • Click in Timeline whilst sequencer is playing or Stop sequencer
  • Observe that Autoscroll is no longer suspended

You have to click the autoscroll button or the F key while in stop to switch it permanently off.

That’s correct, but that is not what I am trying to achieve.

I want to be able to stop Autoscroll from turning back on automatically, not switch it off permanently, otherwise I would stop using it altogether.

Basically, the feature needs an overhaul. It has behaved this way for far too long and needs to be developed further.

In other words, why would anyone want Autoscroll to switch back on, from a suspended state, just because you have clicked on a place in the timeline, that is different to what is currently being traversed?

The other scenario where this undesired behaviour occurs, is when you stop the sequencer.

So, why does autoscroll unsuspend, or switch on automatically, just because I have stopped, and subsequently restarted the sequencer or otherwise clicked somewhere else in the timeline?

These are two situations, where Autoscroll switching back on, literally “by itself” is inappropriate and gives rise to the thought that just maybe the community isn’t so professional at all, otherwise why wasn’t it picked up sooner?

What you describe happens here too, and is surely intentional. The autoscroll is suspended until you start your next playback. Isn’t that why it’s called “suspended” and not “off”? Suspended is temporary, until you take another action. If you want to temporarily switch it off, just press F instead of clicking on an empty space. And then press F again to turn it back on. Nothing is “permanent”.

I fail to see the problem, but then again, maybe I’m just not that professional. :man_shrugging:

Hi,

This doesn’t help? Then you switch the Auto-scroll off and it never switches on.

Hi Martin,

I believe I have described the situation adequately but to re-iterate, I do not want to turn off Autoscroll, rather I wish to keep it suspended until I turn it back on, which presumably would involve the F keypress.

Currently, pressing F when autoscroll is suspended turns it on which is fine because I am not asking for anything to change other than for Autoscroll to not start back up because of a change in location or playback status.

Then, turn off Suspend Auto-Scroll when Editing, and just use F. Then it will turn off as you please, and never turn on until you press F again. You then control explicitly when it should turn on and off. Isn’t that what you want?

The only habit you would have to change, is that you have to press F (or another assigned key) to stop the auto-scroll instead of clicking on an empty area.

Suspend in this context means “suspend until next playback”. So, you actually don’t want to suspend. You want to turn it on and off manually. By insisting on using the Suspend feature by clicking on empty space, you are causing the behaviour by Nuendo that you don’t want.

It has notthing to do with Autoscroll per se, it is while Autoscroll is suspeneded.

All I am asking is for Autoscroll not to turn back on because of two events, stop sequencer and play from a new location.

Is that so difficult for “professionals” to understand?

Not possible. Make a feature request

for now i can give you this suggestion:

disable suspend in autoscroll
or
Use the spacebar to stop playing, push f twice to disable autoscroll and push play (spacebar)
That works better for you.
Because then the screen is not going to move at a moment that you do not want the screen to move.

Usely when you stop playing the scroll stop anyway.
I’ll understand that you want to do this while the music just play along, but then you bump into this issue

P.S.
If the suspend is disabled you can use the F key to stop autoscroll while music plays along.
So use the F key to stop autoscrolling without suspend for now.
