Is there a relationship between playing techniques the expression map?

Hi,

In Cubase 15’s score, is there a relationship between playing techniques and the articulations in the expression map ?
For example, can I “draw” a legato on the score, which will then be played that way (on an instrument track with multiple articulations) ?

Best,

Paz

Kind of, yes, it is getting more in this direction but not everything is there.

When you add playing techniques in the score now like “con sord.” it will add the proper direction entry to the expression map as well. This also works with Dorico project import, where any text directions like this from a Dorico project will suddenly appear as lane entries in the expression map if you assign an expression map to the track after the fact.

However, this is at the moment only working with articulations of type “direction”. With type “attribute” things are a little more complicated. In Cubase 15 there are two ways of adding these things, and one will give you playback and display and the other will only give display and no playback. Attribute articulations added through lane entries in the key editor, or via the info line “Articulations” drop down, will both play back and will appear in the score editor. The info line articulations drop down is also available within the score editor. However, attribute articulations added in other ways within the score editor will not play back because they do not get linked to maps. When importing a Dorico project these attribute articulations get mapped to the “display only” ones so they will not trigger expression map entries.

As for slurs, i don’t think they have any integration at the moment.

There’s been substantial movement forward in Cubase 15 in this regard as Cubase 14 did very little here, but there’s still more work to be done to bring things closer together.

Thank you very much for your very informative reply.

I have always found it more practical in my case to use ‘attribute’ type articulations. What is currently making my life difficult (relatively speaking) is not being able to select multiple parts (e.g. the instruments in a string quartet) and change their articulation in the key editor for everyone at the same time (the Q-Link on the mixer would be very useful).

That’s why I thought it would be easier to do it through the score editor, which I believe after reading your message. I need to test all this to see if it will simplify my workflow.

A quick question: do you know if it’s possible to delete all articulations and playing techniques after pressing Ctrl-A in the score editor?

Thank you very much for your help,

Paz

I’m not sure about keys to delete things specifically, but while I suspect it is possible to do what you want at the moment with directions, it is likely not with attributes.

However, I should also mention that in Cubase 15 the enhancements have made it much easier to use maps with a large number of direction type articulations which was not feasible before. And it is possible to select direction type articulations through a drop down list, this is easiest when the lanes are in collapsed state instead of being shown in expanded state, since the drop-down list is not the same one on the info bar but is instead on the left hand side of the articulation entry itself in the lane.

Thank you !

Do you know if it is possible to select multiple parts (all the instruments in a string quartet for example) and change their articulation in the key editor for everyone at the same time ?

In the key editor, no. I can see potential issues with this because different maps may not have matching techniques, so I am not sure we would ever see such a thing, although the developers may surprise us.

In the score editor, possibly, but again I expect this will work only with directions. See what happens in the score editor if you try adding a playing technique like “con sord.” to multiple staves at once. If that works, these should certainly appear in the respective tracks as map entries.
