Is there a way to have the Project Window play only ONE part, not all of them, without soloing?

I may be missing something here, but…

Imagine this setup:

  1. In the Project Window I have an Audio Part which is time warped for tempo.
  2. I also have a Violin Part and some other Parts in the Project Window.
  3. In a Key Editor I have the Violin Part open for midi editing.

What I want is to have ONLY the Audio Part (not all Parts) play when the Project Window is active, and the Violin Part play when the Key Editor is active.

I can’t get only the Audio Part to play in the Project Window.

If I solo the Audio Track… all is good for the Part Window. However, the Violin Part does not play in the Key Editor because it inherits the effect of the Solo in the Part Editor.

How do I get the Project Window to play only the Audio Part without soloing it?

Any ideas on that? Is there a preference I’m missing?

Thanks!

M

I’m not sure I understand what you are attempting to do but did you try Play Selection Solo (Ctrl + Alt + Spacebar)?

Have you checked out the “Listen mode”?
Depends on the Cubase version you have tho; which you dont mention.

You need to do it, through hardware.

I have a motu 8A, and the routing allows a single-click to change what is being heard (2 for stereo, once for each side or a mixer preset can be used).

To explain, I play back MIDI tracks, via VSTi’s and then I record these in hardware, which I listen to via the audio interface, using the routing matrix so technically I can select between a MIDI part and an Audio part, with a single click to go back-and-forth, i.e., to be able to compare instrumentation of the recorded audio, which in your case I believe may be an actual violin, and the VSTi output, fed by a MIDI part, whilst a project is playing.

Your request may not be able to be accomplished using software alone, or else using the solo facility, and I would augur that the aforementioned facility is not designed to accomplish what is being asked.

Thanks stingray. The keyboard shortcut assigned to Ctrl+Alt+Space is assigned to Locate Selection Start. Is there something else it should be assigned to?

Along those lines, I have a shortcut (A) bound to “play selection solo”. This puts the audio track in solo and works, BUT the audio always starts at the beginning of the clip. So that’s a no go unfortunately.

Cubase 15, btw

Whoops. It’s Cubase 15.

Thanks Emotive, for the explanation. I wish there were a simpler solution.

It’s been a while since I’ve used Cubase (but not that long) and I don’t remember having this problem before. My work flow is the same. I never recall it being an issue going back and forth between the Key Editor and Project window and hearing what I needed to without the rigmarole.

Should I put in a feature request. I’m surprised Cubase doesn’t have what I’m asking for.

Maybe if I had two windows open outside of the project window, one editor for the audio clip and one for the midi key editor. But screen real estate is at premiem for me.

Anyway, thanks.

Where would you like it to start?

Where the cursor has stopped.

I’ve just realized though, that my shortcut key for solo was actually bound to “solo mode toggle modes” instead of “solo”.

This is a good work around. When I click on the Project Window to make it active, I can quickly toggle the solo mode for the audio track. Then before I go back to the Key Editor, hit the shortcut again to mute it.

Seems to be pretty fast for me. I think I’ll use it.
