Is there a way to have dynamics ungrouped (no I do not mean unlinked, I mean grouped) so that for example if I enter < on one group of notes and then on the next group of notes enter > the <> don’t automatically group together? I get frustrated when they automatically group together as I click on the > and try to shorten it but both get changed.
I can’t find any setting in any of the options dialogs nor in the preferences but I may be missing something.
I do know about unlinking and I do have that unchecked in preferences but I really am talking about grouping and ungrouping dynamics.
manually ungroup the dynamics, click on end point alt-shift-left-arrow to shorten and the desired effect occurs - central point between the two remains where it was but the decresc is shortened
You could try in Note input mode with the caret showing. Shift-D, < Enter. (still in note input mode) Spacebar a few times until the length is ok. Shift-D again, > Enter. Spacebar a few times until the length is ok. Finally Enter.
I find that only occurs when ending the first gradual dynamic on the same note as one starts the second gradual dynamic. One option is to start the second dynamic on the next note then use your mouse to drag it over to start on the same note as the other ends on. There is no way that I can find to keep the grouping from occurring.
Yes and you staring the second hairpin on a different note. In his example, it appears that the first ends on the same note as the second begins. That’s not how I would do it, nor you based on your reply but it’s how @dhbailey wants to do it.
I entered the crescendo on the first note, not selecting an ending note. Dorico decided where to end it. Then I clicked on the first note where I wanted the Decrescendo to start. It seems I’m doomed to having to play around with things either way. Shorten the crescendo before entering the decrescendo, or let Dorico set the length of them both, then have to ungroup before trying to shorten the decrescendo.
It seems to me that with all the things we as users can set, given the various options dialogs and preferences that it might be possible to not have the program group neighboring dynamics automatically.
Thanks for the responses – you’ve given me things to think about in my approach to this situation!
Thanks for that reminder – I keep forgetting about that. Some day I’m going to sit down and type out a list of all the functions I use regularly like that and come up with a meaningful set of shortcuts.
