In this piano piece I’m writing, in indicating the fingerings for the player. I wanted to know if there was any way to force the number to sit right above the notes, not at the left of them.
I checked engraving options but didn’t find anything useful.
I tried moving them manually in engrave mode, but the option to hide the lines of the staff wasn’t available unless the button for positioning the numbers to the left of the note was pressed, and even then moving them around manually made the lines of the staff behind appear weird / unpleasant.
If anyone has got a solution it’d greatly appreciated!

This is a Property (that you probably activated inadvertently). Just uncheck this in the properties panel (you may need to scroll the panel to the right to see the properties for Fingering, or search for Fingering in the little search field of the properties panel):
This isn’t the issue. Like I said in the post, I tried using the “place at left of the notehead” in the properties panel. But the problem is that the default positioning of the numbers is above the staff. I need them inside the staff right above the notes.
Pressing the “at left of notehead” button just places them right there, not above.

Well, I tried this Engraving option set to -3 (default is 1) and here the result (added a random left hand voice too…):
And reducing the Fingering font style I have this result (maybe there are other better solutions…):

Second attempt (with factory resetted Engraving options):
- just put the property Position left of notehead for the desired fingerings (the background is erased),
- in engrave mode drag the fingerings all at once on top of the notes (the horizontal spacing corrects automatically and the background erasing is maintained):
