I know I can open older version project files in newer versions but is there any performance advantage to starting from scratch?
The reason I ask is I have a large orchestral template that I’ve been using in Cubase 12 and I’m wondering if there’s any advantage to recreating it from scratch in a new version (15 and hopefully 16 in a couple months). The issue isn’t FX plugins - I only have a few and they’re easy to re-insert. It’s the VSTi setup (rack instruments), MIDI routing to those instruments and audio group channel routing that I’m concerned about.
For example, are there any performance-reducing patches/adjustments that Cubase makes to the 12 file when opening in 15? I’m not sure I’d be able to tell on just a few tracks, I suspect I’d have to recreate most or all of the hundreds of tracks in the file.
The 12 template seems to run OK when I open it in 15 but I wonder if I can squeeze out more performance if I rebuild it within 15.
If it “seems to run OK”, why would you mess with it? What kind of “performance” are you looking to improve on?
I think the only way to come to a conclusion on this would be if you rebuilt your template in Cubase 15 and compared performance with the old template.
There probably isn’t any advantage to recreating them from scratch, but I usually “update” my templates to the current version by opening the template in an empty project and creating a new version using Save as Template… just in case
Projects based on templates, that were initially created with Cubase 13.0.40 or lower should not grow to a file size of 4GByte or more. It could lead to data loss. If your projects usually are close to this file size you should rather start to build a new template. I guess it is possible to create a new project and import all your desired tracks from the old template into it.
Projects based on templates that were initially created with Cubase 13.0.50 or higher cannot be opened in version of Cubase 13.0.40 or lower.
