Issue by reading a 59.94 H264 video in Cubase Pro 11

Hello,

can’t read a 59.94fps video in a 59.94fps project (same tune, the video is the music video i made for the cubase project.).

The video work for one second and stop. only way i found to have it playing was to put the project at 29.97.

any idea ? the video is just normal video H264 59.94 with an AAC 320kbs stereo track output from Vegas Pro.

Thanks !

Hi @Martyprod

What is the video bit rate? I also use Vegas and noticed Cubase struggles with mp4 if the video bit rate is too high. It is strange because prores has even higher bit rate and it plays fine.

Hi ! It’s for youtube, so I don’t set it big, only 14Mb/s, Constant Bitrate and i use Intel Hardware encoding (iGpu ). I use the Magix H264 codec as output.

Can you try with lower bit rate?

I noticed when I render from Vegas using 720p template it plays fine but when using 1080p template it stops after a few seconds in Cubase.

But it’s not the video resolution or frame rate but the bit rate. Vegas defaults to 6 Mbps for 720p template and I think 12Mbps for 1080p template.

Can you try lower bit rate? Maybe 6 Mbps or even less. Just while you work in Cubase. Then you can re-render the final video from Vegas at any bit rate you want.

Sometimes I use xmedia recode to convert the videos and it defaults to 2.5 Mbps. Those videos play fine in Cubase.

Thanks for the suggestion, i will try that, but… as said, i’m afraid it has something to do with frame rate too, as if i put the project in 29.97, the video plays fine (the same one).

I had an issue with a video sent by the drummer i’m working with, he sent it from his Go pro, as he’s from Uk it was in 50fps, and to watch it in cubase, i had to re encode it or set the project in 25fps (but i don’t remember, i can check, i still have the video in the folder as it’s the same project).
same with a bass player i did some projects with, 50 fps camera (don’t remember which one), m2ts.

i’ll do some test and will let know ! thanks for these suggestions ! but i can tell you that 10 mb/s H264 1080p from Vegas work fine here, as it’s the output i do for all my 1080p file i send to youtube. i put an extra 4mb/s only for 59.94.

You are probably right. I just tried a short video at 59.94 and my bit rate theory doesn’t work.

from there the right test to do with 59.94 is to try different codec with vegas pro. to see if all of them fail (and so it’s an issue with vegas pro, or cubase with 59.94). i’ll try to re encode it with a third party encoder, but i have doubts, as said, other source i used (like the one from the drummer and the bass player (which was 25 interlaced) failed too. i’ll do that tomorrow, will test different template / encoding.

Good idea :+1:

I was doing just that, trying different codecs and render settings in Vegas. So far the only file that actually played in Cubase at 59.94 fps was rendered using the 720p template and changing the frame rate to 59.94

Or possibly the other way around. Start with 1080p 59.94 fps but change the video resolution to 720 before rendering.

what bother me is to know which is the faulty, so we can complain at the vegas pro team (who never listen, except if the software crash for all the users, like the previous build of V19), or Cubase. Curious to see if by re encoding the video processed with a third party software, if it works or not.

Sorry to not being of big help tonight, the weather is a hell tonight here … no energy to do anything.

here are the tests done, done with Vegas Pro 19 last build. I use only intel iGpu (intel graphics 630 for encoding. all videos are in constant bitrate. Audio output 44.1khz 320kbs AAC.
Gear : Cubase PRo 11 , 32Gb DDR4, Z270 M-itx, Cpu intel i7-7700, Palit 1050ti KalmX. Screen : Full HD 24" AOC HDMI, Dpi 100%.

Source (Vegas Pro) : Sony H264 14Mbs CBR 59.94

Result : Doesn’t Work, stop playing, play, stop etc…

Source (Vegas Pro) : Magix H264 59.94
Cubase Project FrameRate : 29.97
Result : Works

Result : H264 (no matter the codec) at 59.94 doesn’t work in cubase, except by using Prores (like you said).

Now from other source :
AVCHD interlaced 25fps Qicktime Mov : Works in 25 and 50fps, project
M2ts file : can’t import, not compatible.
Go Pro 50fps AVC1 in cubase 50fps project = NOT WORKING !!
Go Pro 50fps AVC1 in cubase 25fps project = WORKING !!

Conclusion : it seems it’s not vegas pro related. Pro res work no matter bitrate and project, but it seems cubase has issues displaying H264 /AVC/AVC1 50 and 59.94fps file in 50 and 59.94 project.
if project is reduced by 2 (25 and 29.97fps), the file is playing.

doesn’t matter the bitrate (Mbs) as the prores or the AC1 Gopro has a a crazy one !

so it’s seems it’s related to H264 Mp.4 + doubleframe rate (50 or 59.94)
