Issue with continuous glitches on playback - Cubase or interface?

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone could help me. I’m not sure if it’s a Cubase issue, or a Windows issue, or a bit of both, but maybe someone here has run up against this problem or something similar!

I recently upgraded to a new laptop: an HP Elitebook 860 G10 with an Intel Evo i7 processor, running Windows 11 Pro. RAM is 32GB.

I’m running Cubase Pro 12 and my interface is a Tascam US-16x08.

The interface worked fine with my previous laptop, which was an HP Probook, with (if I recall an Intel Core i5 and 16GB of RAM.

However, since setting up the new machine, I’m having problems with glitches and pops on playback. Not the occasional glitch - it’s more of a constant thing.

It’s not just in Cubase, although it’s more noticeable there. I’ve tried adjusting buffer size on the Tascam’s settings panel and giving audio highest priority in Windows settings, which has helped a little, but only a very little.

I’ve been able to record tracks without artefacts when recording into a new project, but when recording overdubs in existing projects, the newly recorded files have the same glitches and pops. More when there are more tracks.

I’m calling them glitches, because I can’t think of another word for it, but in some ways it’s more like a stutter - like the audio is cutting in and out very rapidly.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing that kind of issue?

Thanks in advance,

Ross

Hi,

Could you test your system by using LatencyMon utility, please?

Hi Martin, thanks for your reply! I have run the software and received the following report:

Conclusion: Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates.

Would not have expected this! Is it because something is conflicting with the Tascam drivers?

Hi,

I’m not a Windows expert. Please follow the LatencyMon recommendation.

When I buy a new PC I always wipe the C: drive and install everything I need, myself. Off the shelf PCs all too often come with a bunch of useless kak.
And, as @Martin.Jirsak says, roll up your sleeves and dig into the BIOS and turn off all the eco nonsense.

Thank you both. I’ll look into this and see what I can do. Appreciate your help!

LatencyMon is not always correct, but what does it report as the cause? Usually you’ll see something that has the highest DPC time impact. Maybe just post a screen shot.

Also, before trying anything else, in Windows, go into settings > System > Power and change the Power Mode to “Best Performance”.

That HP has a bunch of HP optimization software preinstalled, from what I see, so will be interesting to see if that is causing any issues here.

Hi Pete. Thank you for your reply. Sorry for my delay in replying. I’ve attached a screenshot from the Latency Monitor report - is this the relevant section?

i’ve got the laptop set to best performance when plugged in and running off the battery.

Many thanks,

Ross
