Hello all,
I got a strange sample rate issue. I accidently switched the sample rate of my audio interface from 48kHz to 44.1kHz before recording some audio tracks. The sample rate in the project settings stayed at 48kHz. Next day when I loaded the song, everything was played back faster and in a higher pitch. When I turn down the framerate again, everything is played correctly, but this does not transfer to a mixdown. The resulting mp3 is still playing too fast and singing with a mickey mouse voice. ![]()
I tried to fix this by changing the sample rate of the project from 48 to 44.1, too. But this introduced even more chaos. (Luckily I already anticipated this and made a backup before.)
Can anyone guide me through this? How can I make this project play (and mix down) in the right speed again?
I would use a third party tool to resample the audio files back to 48. (In the past I batch resampled my entire sample library to 48kHz with R8Brain Pro. But I think that one is for .wav’s only). Wavelab can do that, but other software can too. Then it will match again and you won’t have to do anything else.
I don’t know exactly what procedure you’ve used, but:
Sample rate har to be set initially both in your hardware (interface) and in the Project setup window; in other words: before you make any recording or importing audio. When inporting audio you will be asked if you want to make a samplerate change.
This was my first intuition too. But I am not sure how this will work, because Cubase seems to change the speed of the song, and the pitch of the vst-Instruments, too. I didn’t expect this.
This is another problem. When I use or used Cubase, afterwards my audio turns silent for any other Windows program. It only gets herarable again, when I turn the sample rate to 44,1kHz. That’s why I did it. Very stupid, I know. But now I thought I could somehow avoid rerecording everything I did yesterday.
Does it change the BPM setting?
If so, maybe it doesn’t have anything to do with samplerate?
No. It still shows the same BPM but it plays faster to match the higher piched Audio. Very strange.
Are your tracks in Musical Mode?
What is happening here is that the recordings are at 44.1k but the wav header tells software it is 48k. You need to rewrite the wav header without resampling anything.
As you dsicovered, even if you trick the software into thinking it’s correct rate by changing the project rate it will change pitch on mixdown.
How you fix this depends what software you have available…Wavelab can do it, I think Audacity can - There used to be a little app called header investigator but it doesn’t like modern windows.
