I am constructing a library Template at the moment, either I have the wrong approach, or using Link Channels or Link Groups has “issues”. I am using this fuction a lot.
I have linked Woodwinds and seem to have Grouped them. I have linked Strings and Grouped them. Not really sure how.
I then selected all Brass channels, and then selected “Link Channels”. I noted that the label had “…” after it, and was expecting a menu, but no.
So, I looked above the mute button in the big mixer, the slots are blank. I went over to the Orange Link button on the mixer toolbar, and it had two options Strings and Woodwinds, no Brass.
Got nowehere!
Decided to try to unlink and try again. I go to right-click “unlink channels”. I click it, nothing happens.
Now it’s stuck. It won’t unlink or link. It always says “unlink channels” never link. The channels are not linked
I have to do this another eight times.
Q: Is there a difference between linked channels and Group channels - beside Q link?
Q: There seems ot be no way to get to be able to create a series of groups - ie. Woods, Brass, Strings, Percs etc,and then ascibe tracks? Really???
Some of this is me re-learning the ropes but currently I am at a loss as to what to do
Second of your questions, my typo I did not mean “Group Channels”, I meant “Link Groups”.
Yes, In your example you have one Link Group “Brass Link”. Can you set up ten or more of them somewhere, and then add channels to specific Link Groups later?
I have found a workaround. I won’t call it a solution as its not part of linking in the manual.
Set up one Channel from your group as you like it.
Add your reverbs sends or whatever, ensure the Routing is correct.
Then above the mute button in the channel, in the mixer, right click chevron in box to get menu .
Select “Included in Link” choose an already established link here, or, for a new Group with a new name, use the menu item above.
Then Right click on the whole channel and copy it
Move to the next channel and select the rest of your intended group
Right Click Paste Settings to selected Channels
You might need to wait a few seconds
Essentially this workaround means
Set up one channel tikatiboo inc everything you need
Copy that channels settings
Yes I have these options - sort of. I might say this is a hefty library template not meant for usage directly, all tracks are kept disabled, unless for auditioning purposes. It’s part of sa workflow |I am planning, but I won’t distract with details here.
I have finished what I need to do now, but it has proved very flaky. Often a Linked Group will loose it’s name, trying to link a selection of tracks, works, as long as you realise that if a track already has an established link this will not be overidden. Sometimes Linked Groups disappear, but this may be to do with disabling tracks - I think.
Your pic shows ten linked groups, but the only way I know of setting up ten linked groups is to select a bunch of tracks link them, find some more, link them… ten times. No possibility of setting up ten empty groups and then populating them AFAIK.
Now that my Library Template is finished, next is a working template for actual music, this will be a copy of the Library, but with almost all tracks removed - keeping Group Tracks, Fx tracks and VCAs - all set up for surround, and a minimal amount of Instrument tracks - for testing. If I need a new sound, I can then open up the Library and audition what I want. Choose, and export to my song. All tracks arrive ready routed. This is the aim. I think it works.
My whole system is now organised into this library.
Sorry I wasn’t able to replicate the issue you were having. Sounds like you found a way to work around it and get the job done, so that’s good.
You’re right. Perhaps it would be beneficial to have a “Link Group manager” or something.
Sounds like a solid template strategy. I’m assuming you plan on using Import from Project? I do something similar but use Track Archives instead. Just like with Import from Project, signal routing is preserved as long as the destination buses match. It’s quite powerful.
