Issues with Cues

My publishers tells me I need to cue the Bass Clarinet part (5 line from top) into the Bari. Sax. (8th line) and Bassoon (3rd line). As you can see this puts the Bassonn part in the treble clef and there are a couple notes in the Bari. Sax. that need to be raised an octave. I can’t seem to figure out how to move those notes in those two parts without moving the notes in the Bass Clarinet.

Any help appreciated.

You can get the bassoon to show in bass clef by selecting the cue and setting Transposed Clef to None and Octave Shift to -1.

I’m not sure why the bari sax needs to be changed – aren’t those notes all in range? But if you want to put a couple of bars up an octave, then you can enter separate cue sections – for example, bars 21-24 and then bars 25-26. In the cues you want up an octave, set the Octave Shift to 1 and Start Text to an empty string, to hide the cue label, and toggle on the Show Octave Transposition property but leave the box unticked. If your ranges start/end in the middle of a bar, you also need to turn on the Hide Rests Around Cue property.

This may be awkward if there’s a slur spanning the two cue ranges, but it works here, as an example, where I started the second range on the third beat of the fourth bar:

Thank you. Yes, they are in range but this is a grade 1 piece and this publisher will not let me go below F at this grade level.

Aaron,
I am trying your method to change the treble clef in the Bass Clarinet cue into the Bassoon part so the bassoon part will not show the treble clef. Sorry I am so dense on this but could you write out the individual steps to do that as per your instructions you sent yesterday/ I am having trouble even getting the “Cues” section to show up in the Properties Panel.

Aaron,
I was able to figure out how to get rid of the treble clef in the Bassoon part but am still having trouble with the second part of your solution on how to get individual notes within the cue to shift octaves. Your second paragraph above. You mention entering separate cue sections but I am unclear on the steps to do that. I would love to learn though.

I need to shift the G in bar 24 and the F in bar 26 up an octave in just the cue for Bassoon.

Cues have handles that you can move to determine the extent of the cue; they don’t need to cover entire bars.

  1. Select bars 21-23 in the bari sax part and create a cue from the bassoon
  2. Drag the right handle of the cue to the right, so that the first half note in bar 24 also appears in the cue
  3. With this cue selected, turn on the “Hide Rests Around Cue” property
  4. Select all of bar 24 in the bari sax and create a new cue from the bassoon
  5. Drag the left handle of the cue to the right, so that the cue only encompasses the second half note in bar 24
  6. With this cue selected:
    • Turn on the “Hide Rests Around Cue” property
    • Turn on the Octave Shift property and set it to 1
    • Toggle on the Show Octave Transposition property, but leave the box unticked
    • Toggle on the Start Text property but leave the edit box blank
  7. Select bar 25 in the bari sax and create a new cue from the bassoon; do the same with bar 26
  8. Select the cue in bar 25, toggle on the Start Text property but leave the edit box blank
  9. Repeat step 6 with the cue in bar 26, except that you don’t need to turn on the Hide Rests Around Cue property

Whew! Well, your solution worked perfectly but was quite a bit of work. I would NEVER have figured that out on my own. Thanks so much for your help, as usual.
