Issues with MIDI input from keyboard, both HALion and Groove Agent

Running the latest versions of each.

Here’s what’s happening:
If I open Grove Agent or HALion by themselves, set the MIDI input device and channel, set the patch or drum kit, etc. - playing the keyboard creates the expected sound from the VST app.

Now, I open Cubase 13, add an instrument track of the either VST app, set the MIDI stuff, load up the patch or drum kit… There is zero response to the MIDI input from the keyboard. The app does generate the expected sounds if I use the on-screen key board/pads, but nothing from the MIDI input. The app doesn’t even show that it’s receiving MIDI input.

If I open up the Cubase studio config screens and watch the MIDI messages, I can see them as they pass by, so I know the keyboard is sending them, and Cubase is getting them correctly. It seems as though Cubase isn’t passing the MIDI messages to the VST app.

Coming up from a cold boot, going directly into Cubase, new channel, setup VST blah blah blah- same thing.

Does anyone have a solution to this one??

Thanks.

So, there should be a MIDI In activity visible in the meters, on the right of the Transport bar. If so :

  • The MIDI Thru Active setting in the Edit > Preferences > MIDI panel should be ticked.
  • Check that either the Monitor or the Record Enable button of the involved track (MIDI/Instrument) is active.
  • Check again its Input Routing (which port ?).
  • Check also the channel(s) used.

THANK YOU!!! Hitting Monitor or the Record Enable did the trick. I don’t know why I missed that.

Now to make some music…
