I've lost playback sound, yet again

My computer (Mac) sound is fine. I’m on the latest Dorico version. I’ve gone to Playback Template and picked one, again. I’ve checked the mutes on my mixer, again. I’ve restarted the computer. And still there’s no sound. Any suggestions?

Never mind. For some reason it just started to work again. I wasted an hour before it just started on its own.

There are many issues you can have but you often have no sound because there is no active audio device connected, That can happen when you deconnect an audio interface or your head phones, You normally would get a message and switching to “Build In” will reestablish sound.

If no message appeared, you can go to Edit in the top menu and near the bottom you will see the audio device setup. Build in should in general always work and re-establish sound,

What is a bit annoying is that Dorico does not see devices connected during the session. So if you activate your AirPods during the Dorico session you do not see them in the device menu, You have to shutdown and restart Dorico to make them visible.

Thank you. The tip about Edit, Audio Setup should be very helpful. I didn’t know that was there. That should solve my problem.

As mentioned in an other thread there is a workaround to switch to audio devices added during the Dorico session without closing and opening.

If you create aggregate devices for all audio devices you might use in the Mac Audio Midi Setup. Those are always available in the device list even if not connected.

I’ll try that too. Thanks!

I hate it when that happens!! I got mine back, but I don’t know HOW. So here I am again, with no “I got this” answer. Some day.

So there are three possible solutions (and this is more logical than I originally thought):

  1. If you’re using an external speaker, make sure it’s turned on before you start Dorico. That way the app can find it.

  2. In Dorico go to the Edit dropdown menu, and choose Device Set up. It should give you a choice of output devices.

  3. If you’re on Mac you can go to the Audio MIDI Setup. You should be able to find it in the Applications menu. You can assign midi for the computer itself. You may have to repeat steps 1 and 2 after that.

I hope this helps. So many people in this forum have been helpful to me. It feels good to help someone else as well!
