JABB KS playback: where are the mutes?

I have completed several projects for Big Band and get around OK with Dorico.

I am struggling with getting JABB sounds to respond to the KS triggers.
Start with generic Big Band file. How to load a _pt file?
Garritan JABB.dorico_pt

Manual says: 1. Choose Play > Playback Template to open the Apply Playback Template dialog.
There is no Playback template menu under Play. There is a playing techniques and playback techniques menu under Library.
Did have some luck dragging on the file in write mode!
Set up some voices. Loaded JABB Trumpet.doricolib from a forum.

Managed to get Dorico to playback Garritan sounds [except the TB1 plays back fusion drums1]
I can check my aria—the correct sounds play on the keyboard. The list of KS possibilities is there.
Chosen the correct Expression maps.
No change to normal Garritan Jazz Trumpet KS, or Jazz Trombone KS. Trombone 1 is still playing Fusion drums.
I’ve read manual entries and several forums, watched videos [“it’s easy with Dorico”—not after editing 9 windows and not finding how to open a _pt file]. Opened and edited at least 9 windows following directions.
I read forums where it said “You need to add the “ARIA Player Multi VST_x64” to the whitelist, the regular ARIA Player (including the VST3 version that might be automatically recognized) IIRC doesn’t handle polyphony”

“whitelist” and “IIRC” are terms that are not in the manual.

If I need to purchase something else, let me know. Maybe I need to pay someone for guidance through this part.
Maybe this file will work for someone and they can tell me what I need to do to make it work for me.
Thanks in advance. Maybe someone can get back to me with a link or reference the first part of next year.

From your screenshot of the ARIA player, you don’t have Garritan JABB installed. You only have “Garritan Instruments for Finale” (GIFF). If you want the JABB instruments, then you’ll have to buy JABB from Garritan.

The Jazz > Trumpet KS in GIFF does have similar key switches for Mutes, but I don’t think it responds to all the same CCs as JABB.

The Switches in your expression map are set to the wrong notes. They should be C-2, D-2, etc (at Middle C = C3).

Ah. I see it Playback Template now. Still wasn’t clear what to do with that.

Those were settings from files downloaded from forum.
I get playback from the GIFF, just not mutes. You think that would be solved by purchasing JABB?
I am Finale refugee, so I assumed that if I can get the sounds, that somewhere in these discussions and downloading of John’s garritan file, someone would have mentioned the difference.

Those who kindly offer their Expression Maps and Playback Templates to others are just ordinary users themselves. Often these are just starting points for others to develop them further according to their own taste and needs.

Yes, I appreciate those individuals who offer templates
. I did not get them from an individual—I got it here:

What I did NOT get, is the JABB is different that what JABB sounds I have currently as a Finale refugee. Is it your understanding that I need to purchase JABB again and not from the JABB sounds that came with Finale?

Did you not see… Steinberg cannot be held responsible for downloads from external websites.?

AFAIK JABB is a Garritan product… You do not need to repurchase, but you cannot guarantee it will work well with Dorico (without some effort)

Personally I am miffed that there is no ARIA Multi VST3 available for Windows.

When you buy Finale, you get a comprehensive range of instruments – Orchestral, Jazz, Ethnic, Synthy, etc.

Many of these are ‘cut down’ versions of full Garritan products. The Violins don’t have all the keyswitches that are available in Garritan Personal Orchestra; the Brass and Saxes don’t have all the controls found in Garritan’s Jazz and Big Band (JABB) or Concert and Marching Band products.

The idea is that it’s enough for basic use, but if you want more, you can buy the full products.

Now, John Barron has made a set of Expression Maps and a Playback Template which is designed to be used with the instruments in the purchased JABB package, not the Jazz instruments in GIFF (“Garritan Instruments for Finale”).

It’s perfectly possible to make expression maps and a playback template for the instruments that are bundled with Finale; but no one has done that yet.

However, you may find that these expression maps work a bit better with the GIFF instruments, though you’ll be lacking some functionality which GIFF just doesn’t have compared to JABB.

However, before you buy any Garritan products, bear in mind that they haven’t been updated in years, and are likely as dead as Finale. (“Latest News” on the Garritan home page is dated 2019.)
You may find the following discussion about other Big Band libraries of interest.

I’m slow to the new format—Finale user since 1990—didn’t use anything else. Was not and did not need to be aware of any differences between GIFF and JABB. Did not see the terms GIFF or JABB or GBO until a couple of days ago. Many of these posts use acronyms more than RNs [registered nurses]. Apologies for my ignorance. I started with this post: “No problem using Aria Player and Garritan sound libraries. You might need some expression maps, though - some can be found for download online,” where no distinction was made between GIFF and JABB—and then chased things down rabbit holes of whitelisting and other things. After all, GIFF sounds ARE Garritan sounds and use an Aria player. Who would have known the difference unless you knew the difference? I’m at the point where I’d pay someone to guide me through this.

Someone said Garritan had a sale on Black Friday, and that was just a month ago, so maybe they are still relevant…

Did you not see that I downloaded the Garritan JABB.dorico_pt file from Steinberg, not an external website?

What is AFAIK? This forum uses more acronyms?

If you weren’t aware that the Finale-bundled sounds were only the tip of the Garritan iceberg, then that’s MakeMusic’s poor marketing of their own products.

I don’t think there was a Black Friday sale this year for Garritan. They weren’t even included in the Finale fire sale Summer Sale in 2023.

As Far As I Know.

I think it wasn’t anything other than—these sounds are Garritan sounds, Finale called them JABB sounds, they work with the only product [Finale] I have used for three decades, I am unaware of other products because what I have works, and what I have had been called JABB.

I did get my GIFF/JABB Aria sounds to respond to expression map KS, but not the Trombones.
JabbGiffPlaybackTemplateTest3.dorico (1.1 MB)

I’m not sure that Finale ever used the term JABB to describe the Jazz instruments in the Finale-bundled library.

Anyway, we’re now trailing two separate threads dealing with the same issue.

I probably misunderstood any distinction between using Garritan Jazz Band and Garritan Instruments for Finale.

Still unanswered question—will I get better response from purchasing [what I now know as] JABB other than messing with GIFF?

TBH, John Barron’s JABB playback template works, but there are some problems and limitations with it; so you may have to tinker with it anyway.

Have you tried the Expression Maps that I provided in my earlier post, and read the lengthy discussion about other Big Band libraries?

oh, yes. I read that lengthy discussion before I posted here. I tried your JABB revised. It must only work on JABB and not the truncated GIFF JABB. Still getting low piano sounds playing with TB. No mute sounds on Trp or Tb.

[More acronyms are used here than used by RNs, PAs, or MDs. I’ve had to look up TBH and AFAIK today presuming they were some brand of VST ]

So many acronyms I don’t know! I searched the manual three days ago for IIRC. If there are companies called VSO that sell VST products. SAS, NI, GIFF, JABB. I did an internet search for ASFAIK thinking it was a VST company.

I’ve have to think this is funny.
One hour ago I found out why IIRC is not in the manual—it stands for If I Remember correctly.

TBH = To Be Honest

(We’re just trying to keep you on your toes.)

You can search the internet for these acronyms but YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary — to save you the search)
