Could you recommend a reasonably sounding Double Bass for jazz that also plays back arco?

Arco is synonymous with “Natural” in Dorico, so if you can’t find one instrument that fits, you could load one arco bass into channel 1, and a plucked bass (etc) in channel 2, and configure the expression map to set the channel for each expression.

Thank you Ben, That’s a workable suggestion. But I am hoping for a better sounding plucked bass than the one that comes with the jazz templates and that also can be bowed. Other bass sounds that come with Dorico can be bowed but sound terrible in jazz.

This is a nice Jazzbass. No arco that I know of, though.

The Garritan Jazz library is the only one I know that has a bowed Jazz Bass.

Garritan libraries are recorded “dry”, and the reverb is then applied afterwards. (From the days when adding decay tails to every sample was a file-size luxury.) I used a “Mixed Stage” convolution space, which is generous, without being noticeable.

The complete JABB is something of a mixed bag; and of course MM’s commitment to Garritan and the ARIA Player is … undefined at this time. (Though they are likely to keep working in Plogue’s Sforzando and its successor.)

I don’t have any VSL instruments, so others can confirm or correct me, but I’d imagine the reverb level is adjustable.

The Studio series are recorded dry in a sound absorbing environment, the reverb is added.
