Jazz upright bass arco

Hi! I’m writing a piece for jazz bigband. Upright bass also has arco parts. How do I make NotePerformer make it sound like arco, but still have the non-arco parts sound like a real jazz upright bass, like NP does brilliantly?

I think the only workable [EDIT: one solution (see below for additional)] would be to add a second (“orchestral”) Contrabass instrument to that player, rename the player so it just says “(Upright) Bass,” then write the respective notes on those staves. Then you could adjust things to hide the instrument changes in the part:

Or create a custom Expression Map for the Bass, where Arco changes the MIDI channel to a separate bowed Bass instrument.

You can save VST presets of Noteperformer instruments; or just add a Contrabass staff, and then delete it – the instrument will stay in the NP VST.

Perhaps use the instrument labels arco and pizz.

But if you change the Instrument Change Paragraph style to match the Playing techniques as I did, that will, of course, change for other instruments also.
Alternative, hide them and use Playing techniques.

Am I mistaken or is the intonation of the pizz. F in NP considerably higher than then arco F even in the same octave?

Sounds higher, yes.

Not really on your topic, @RoelVanWijk, but if you’re ever thinking of spending on an upgrade, Ample Sounds makes a really nice upright bass for jazz writing (also a Gibson 335 guitar).

Thanks, this is very helpful. I was hoping for some very simple solution, but I see that that is not possible for now. Thanks you all for the great info.
