Key pressure or aftertouch

I see that you can communicate key velocity to synthesizer but is there a way to send aftertouch, or key pressure, data?

Welcome to the forum, @wrightmath. I’m afraid at the present time there’s no way to send aftertouch MIDI messages in Dorico.

Thank you for your prompt response. Is there any chance aftertouch could be included in the next upgrade? I am a Finale user hoping Dorico will do everything Finale does regarding playback through my synthesizer. I’m delighted to find nearly everything is there, like key velocity and midi control channels. The only thing missing is aftertouch, which I use in every thing I create.
P.S. I’ve tried to make my Kurzweil accept a midi control channel as aftertouch but can’t see that it’s possible.

“The next one”? The Development Team are likely magicians, but some miracles take a while.

It’s impossible for us to include support for aftertouch in the next Dorico 5 maintenance release, and it’s pretty unlikely we’ll be able to include it even in the next major release, but you can consider it on our radar and we’ll think about how we might be able to add it in future.

Thanks Daniel. I realize not many of your users are clamoring for this.

Occasionally Daniel underestimates our evil :smiling_imp: qualities. It is possible (depending on what you want to achieve) if you insert something else in the midi stream between Dorico and the synth. That means using a vst that can host other vst, or else sending it external.

In my case, I send the midi to VCVRack first. I decided to captured the midi sustain pedal, which is used to trigger a slew limiter. The slew is set to increase its value the longer I hold sustain down, with adjustable lag settings to how quickly it ramps up and ramps down again. The changing value is converted to midi pressure/aftertouch by another module and retransmitted with the rest of the midi data to a prophet 10. Basically I do aftertouch for the notes that are down with a shortish blip of my toe, and if I want sustain-only for a patch, or to have aftertouch control of some parameter I do that in the mod/pressure control section of the prophet.

Thanks Gregory. I will investigate your suggestion and see if I can solve my problem on my end.
