I am a new convert to Dorico after using Finale for 25+ years. Please help with this situation:
I have a concert band score for which I am importing xml parts. When I import a clarinet part, for example, I cannot paste it into the score without the key signature of the score changing. How do I get the imported clarinet part added to the score in the correct key?
I have been transitioning from Finale to Dorico as well. Dorico has a really nice feature on the bottom where you can switch between concert pitch and transposed pitch. It took me awhile to figure this out, but check and see if you are viewing in concert pitch or transposed pitch.
Yes, so when I import the clarinet xml, Dorico converts it to guitar. Since guitar is in the key of C and clarinet is in the key of B-flat, when I paste the “guitar” part into the clarinet line of the score Dorico changes the key of my score to match the “guitar” part.
Is there a way to lock the key signature of the score so that the pasted music is forced into that key?
In Setup - have you setup the instrument as a Clarinet.
Click on + under your new Player
Woodwind - Clarinet. on the right you have the option to select the key. If you choose Bb, you should see the key signature on the “Clarinet in Bb” change when you toggle between Concert Pitch and Transposed Pitch.
If you copy from another XML, the key should remain the same for your “Clarinet in Bb”
Thank you for the suggestions, but I am not explaining this well.
How about this…in Finale, you can change a key signature and NOT change the pitches of the written music. In the key signature pop up you could check a box to “hold notes to original pitches.” Have you seen anything similar in Dorico?
So far, in Dorico, when I copy from one part to another only the notes copy for me - the key signature does not change.
Dorico selects items a bit different than Finale did - it has taken me some time to get used to it. Now, when I want to copy an entire staff from one XML file to another Dorico file, I click on the first note of the staff, then CTRL+SHIFT+S (selects from where I click to the end of the flow). CTRL-C. select where I want that to start and CTRL-V.
Not sure, but if you are doing CTRL-A (All ) - may be selecting more than you would like including the Key signature.
Hi Anna, and welcome to the forum! If your Clarinet in B♭ part is importing as Guitar at concert pitch, we need to understand how this is happening. Can you Zip up the XML file and attach it here? (You may need to read more threads to earn a “trust level” so you can upload a file.)
It’s important to know that Dorico always copies the actual pitches, regardless of how they’re displayed. Also Dorico won’t randomly change the instrument from what the XML file says, so the problem is likely at the Finale end.
