Key Switches in Dorico 6

Hi Altogether

Can anybody help me with placing Key Switches 1 tick in front of a note, please !

I use Ample Sound PlugIns, in Logic it just works good out of the Box, because Logic does not alter the Raw Midi Data, but in Dorico it does not realy work because the smallest quantisation amount is a 64th (unfortunately)

Look how great this works with key switches in Logic

Notice how this is in Dorico, not workable with key switches !

and here the E-Mail I got back from Ample Sound

Hello Reto,

Thank you for your reply.

We generally recommend keeping an interval of about 1 tick between key switches and the corresponding notes. In addition, for simultaneous polyphonic notes, it is advisable to slightly stagger them by about 10 ticks whenever possible, as long as it does not affect the musical result.

In short, the principle is to separate key switches and notes within the shortest practical time span. This helps ensure that the MIDI events are received in the intended order, allowing the engine to trigger the articulations correctly.

We hope this information is helpful. Thank you again for your patience and support.

Best regards,

Ruifeng Jiang

You can add a negative value to the delay in the Expression Map editor.

You may want to reduce the Humanization of the start of the note in Playback Options (or their overrides in the map).

If you are importing the MIDI from Logic to Dorico, be aware that Dorico doesn’t know that those are key switches. It treats them as normal notes. There are a few expression maps floating around here for Ample guitars. I have one for both the main panel as well as the strummer panel for the acoustic guitars.

Unfortunately, the notation from a key-switched MIDI import will look terrible as well (see your screenshot). There was a recent thread about this and I believe the solution was to marquee select all the key switches and delete them. Then use Dorico’s workflow (expression maps) to get the articulations back into the score.

EDIT: I should also add that for Ample, key switches can be used in combination, e.g., C#1 followed by G2 (in the guitar range) to force-capo to 15th position. You’ll need to be extra careful if you want to clean them up in Dorico.

It’s also possible to filter out notes of a certain pitch during MIDI import, if you know in advance which notes your keyswitches will be.

That can be useful if you’re going to end up using an expression map to trigger the keyswitches anyway.

Thank you very much to all !
As you can see in my Example above I have 2 Systems , one for to sound it right and that above is for just displaying it right, after I have done the work I hide the one with the Key Switches, what do you think is this a good workflow or is there a better one ?

If it works for you, than it’s a good workflow. I spent a few hours and created a respectable expression map for the Ample main panel and strummer panel. It’s not perfect, but it is clean and handles about 80% of what Ample has to offer, from capo position to strummer chord and sequence changes - all with playing techniques.

The one issue with Dorico and Ample is that the key editor doesn’t read the available automation from the VST like Logic (and maybe Cubase) so you don’t have access to FX Gain(s) etc.

I can share a project exemplifying it if you’d like.

Oh that would be great !
If you would need a Percussion Map I did one for Superior Drummer 3 (The Avatar Natural Preset)

Here you go:

ample - example.dorico (1.3 MB)

First half shows positions and the key switched articulations (except for slide). Second half shows the strummer. Chords are defined in the VST itself and each note represents a particular up/down stroke. I only showed 2 here, but there are many, many variations.

Thanks for the offer, I use Addictive Drums 2 mostly.

Wow thank you very much

Here is a Expression Map for the AmpleSound WhiteFalcon I tried to make
