I’m creating simple music for young students brand new to the keyboard. I need to create an image of a keyboard with note names and finger placement at the top of the page…. similar to that of many beginning methods. How do I do that and is it possible in Dorico?
Welcome to the forum, @carolfeather!
Do you mean you want to create the image in Dorico, or do you want to display an existing image?
I’m wondering if it can be created in Dorico or whether I need to create it elsewhere and import it. It if needs to be imported has anyone had any experience doing that and what did you use? Publishers obviously have access to something…..
There isn’t a native feature in Dorico that allows you to create this kind of image, I’m afraid.
But maybe you could with a font like NorKeys?
Don’t know if this could be an option.
Jesper
Thanks all. It looks like that has possibilities.
I’m assuming that once I’ve made the chart, it could be saved in a format that can be imported.
I’ll try it out soon and report back. Going out of town for a few days.
Yes, sure, for example:
I’ve purchased the font. Do I access it through Dorico or what application do I use to create it?
Normally, from Dorico you have acces to all your fonts (you may need to restart the program if it was running when you installed the font, I think).
OK.. I have the font, I’ve read and understand the instructions. It doesn’t work either in MS Word or in Dorico. When I start to type the letters, the only one that produces a note is F.
What is going on??? Ive used both my stand alone keyboard and the one on the MacBook Air. Neither works. Dorico was opened AFTER the font was installed.
Do you have to font selected before you type? Can you show a picture of your font dialog?
I have used this font many times and it works just fine. I think the solution is probably an easy one.
Update…… I can finally get the keys to show, but it’s randomly putting black ovals on notes without my using the code to do so. How do I get rid of that?
Yes, and it insists on putting dots whether I type the W or not. I would like to start with a blank key below what I need and it puts a dot in the first one regardless of what I do.
Say I’m starting with B. It puts it in with no dot, but as soon as I add C, there is a dot in both notes. Is there a way to erase the dots?
And how do I get the bracket underneath to designate RH or LH?
Can I add letter names under the notes?
Thanks for whatever info you can provide.
Sorry, I don’t know. Paging @NorFont.com
Hi there,
Thank you for using my NorKeys.
All the instructions are explained in the PDF file that comes with the font. I suppose you should have tried the examples out there to understand how the font work ![]()
Here’s the combination you might need:
BCwDDwFGwGABCI
- C: Represents a white key.
- w: Indicates the dot.
- L: Represents the left-hand L.H.
- R: Represents the right-hand R.H.
- m: MIDDLE C
Sharp keys:
- cs: C#/Db (s stands for sharp)
- ds: D#/Eb
- fs: F#/Gb
- gs: G#/Ab
- as: A#/Bb
Flat keys:
- df: Db (f stands for flat)
- ef: Eb
- gf: Gb
- af: Ab
- bf: Bb
Remember to activate or deactivate the Caps Lock button each time you type the keys. If Caps Lock is activated, you’ll type with capital letters to produce the keys. If it’s deactivated, you can type the lowercase w to add dot, flat, sharp…

I strongly recommend reproducing the examples provided in the PDF to thoroughly understand the workflow of the NorKeys font.
NorKeys font doesn’t add note names. You can switch to a different font and type the note names below. It’s something I might consider in the future.

I had looked carefully at all the examples before asking for help.
All I want to do is produce a totally white keyboard. When I type any note in to start, it’s fine, but as soon as I reach B, it automatically puts a dot on the B and the A. If I start on the B, the B is fine, but as soon as I type C they both get dots.
I do understand the difference between the upper and lower case letters.
I have successfully added fingerings.
When I try to add a bracket the o gives me a number above the note. There is no combination that will put the L and R in brackets UNDER the notes.
It honestly feels as though something is corrupted. I’ve not had problems with any other fonts or programs not working correctly. I am really frustrated because I need this element and have now wasted hours without any usable results.
This is what I get when I type all Upper Case letters BCDEFGABCD.
Do I need to discard the downloaded font and redownload it?
Hi Carol,
Could you please draw by hand the examples you want to achieve and paste them here? I’ll do my best to help you.
Best,
—Nordine
