Kontakt Issue Causing Dorico to Stall

Hello All,

I have been going through an issue with Kontakt 8 within Dorico that I was hoping for some help with…

Recently, Kontakt from within Dorico 6 has been having troubles finding my Virtual Drumline library. This really isn’t a problem, as it’s fixed with just opening an instance of Kontakt from within Dorico and clicking on the correct folder where the sounds are located. The problem is that encountering this error is causing the entire sound loading process to grind to a near-halt for my bigger projects. Dorico basically just spins forever trying to load sounds and turns a lot of electricity into heat. What’s weird about this is that if I just open Kontakt 8 on its own, VDL loads just fine, so I’m not terribly sure where the issue is happening on the backend… Usually, Dorico just gives up trying to load the sounds and I’m left with nothing at the end.

For reference, I am using BBCSO Professional template created by Dorico in conjunction with Noteperformer and the VDL template created by Eric Kruse. OS is Windows 11, and I am working on the latest version of Dorico 6.

Kontakt can really be a PITA when it comes to finding files… I hope you have not been using some “clever” optimizing program like Clean my Mac or equivalent, as it notoriously deletes essential files for that file structure to work. I’ve been there🤷

Hi @lipohlmann ,

the alert dialog that you took a screenshot of does not get thrown by Dorico but the Dorico audio engine, which is a separate process that runs in the background. But unless you prompt that alert window, the main thread of the audio engine process is blocked, and that is the reason why also Dorico freezes in, because the inter process communication between the two is done on the main thread. Thus Dorico sends new requests to the audio engine and never gets an answer, because of the blocking alert window.

@Ulf Interesting… Always good to know how the code is working on the backend!

While this isn’t a satisfactory solution, I actually ended up doing a full reinstall of Windows 11 because my computer is running a haphazard dual-boot configuration (I’m a Linux user but have resigned myself to Windows to run music software…), and doing a full reinstall of Dorico, Kontakt 8, etc. seems to have fixed the issue I was having before. Now, when the system freezes and throws the error above, it doesn’t get frozen anymore and I can just go in and select the correct directory.

@MarcLarcher I don’t trust Windows to do anything except use excessive amounts of RAM, so I opt for manual selection every time  #LinuxIsKing
