KS instrument and DXF instrument on the same staff?

I’m a Dorico newby. Is it possible to use an EWQLSO KS patch and a DXF patch in the same score without putting them on separate staves? I want to have the horns play the KS patch for most of the piece with an occasional swell using the Dxf patch. I need to be able to use a hairpin for a crescendo under the KS patch and have it work correctly, then switch to the Dxf patch and do a swell in the horns using the Dxf patch, and have it work correctly there, too. I’ve tried loading the KS instrument and adding switches for staccato, legato, etc…but when I try to add a channel change to the channel where the DXF instrument is loaded it doesn’t work. I apologize if this has already been answered. I can’t find it.

I would have each patch on a different channel in Opus and the use a Channel Change for each different Playback Technique you want. This is done via the Expression Map.

E.G. set the Crescendo to change to Channel 2 and vice versa…

I tried that but it wasn’t working when I assigned the channel change to “crescendo”, and besides I still want crescendo to work normally with the various articulations in the KS channel. So I ended up creating my own playback technique called dxf and assigning the channel change to that. So when I add dxf to a note, it causes play to switch to the channel that has the dxf patch loaded in it. Then I can hide the dxf marking so it doesn’t print. I also had to make sure that crescendo uses both velocity and CC1 for dynamics so it works for both the dxf and the KS patch. I just load the dxf patch in the next channel after the KS patch, and have dxf issue a relative channel change of +1. Seems a little kludgey but it works. I’m open to suggestions if there’s a better way. Thanks.
