I want to be able to have Roman numeral chord indications below the bottom staff that are not tied to the actual notes. Is there a way to do that?
When I use the lyrics tool the labels always have to follow the voices that are in use at any particular time, and when I move or copy the notes that are labeled, the chord symbols propagate all through the score.
I want a way to sketch out the chords below an empty staff as I am writing, and to able to copy those progressions to a new location later in the score.
I just tried one approach:
Using the “donation-ware” font MusAnalysis (made by the forum’s own @dan_kreider) I entered four RN symbols (EDIT: using the caret to position them on each beat) as Staff-attached Text, using f to flip them below the staff:
Notice that the “V” gets pushed down when all the measures are empty, but this can be fixed easily enough, either with layout spacing options or creating system breaks:
From here it’s pretty straightforward to select and opt/alt - click copy them to other measures.

Thank you very much! I can make that work without using another font, even. I don’t get the caret part; it just inserts notes for me, but I can move the text where I want it without that. I am really only noting the tonic of each chord so my needs are pretty simple.

If you navigate the caret through the measure with arrow keys, invoking shift + X creates the staff-attached text precisely where you want it. Convenient if you plan to copy patterns and want the same rhythmic alignment.
