Launchkey 88 Key Volume input?

Hello! New to the game here, coming from StudioOne.

I recently acquired Cubase Pro and a Novation LaunchKey 88. I’m not sure I set up the LaunchKey correctly. When I play the keyboard, the keys produce the same volume no matter what. Only the modulation switch can change volume.

Am I able to set this up so that the proper volume inputs are sent into Cubase to account for the “weightedness” of the keys, so that it sounds natural? I’ve tried a number of settings in the “Note Expression Input Device” screen but have not figured this out yet.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to this forum.

I suppose that we’re talking about the velocity here. In this case, most midi keyboards can let you alter this in their settings panel. In the case of the Launchkey if I recall correctly, there are three velocity curves and an Off settings. The way you describe it, I think that you have set this to Off (?)

Where do these velocity settings live in Cubase?

Nowhere inside the DAW. These are settings on the controller itself, as described in its manual. Here’s a screenshot from the mk3 model:

So I did check this on the keyboard, and they were set to “normal.” It just isn’t translating in Cubase, so I assumed it was a DAW setting.

I see.

I guess this is another place to have a look. I never use this, so not the right guy to advice, sorry. There are more advanced users in this forum, most probably they can be of help.

Let’s get some info about what’s actually happening.

  1. Add a MIDI Track to a Project
  2. Set its MIDI Input to the Launchkey
  3. Enable Monitoring on the Track
  4. Find the MIDI Inserts for the Track & load up a MIDI Monitor
  5. Play your Launchkey & see if the Velocity values change or stay constant on the Monitor
