Leaving "Note Input" (using pitch before notation), why does it highlight something very far away?

If I finish typing a note, and hit enter or shift-N to leave note input mode and I want to edit the note I just entered, the note will not be highlighted. The highlighted item will be a couple instruments apart or all the way at the top of the piece.

Here’s an example:

I finished inputting the B natural. I want to go back to correct its length. I exit note input mode, and it’ll look like this:

(“An error occurred: Sorry, new users can only put one embedded media item in a post.”)

The key signature is highlighted instead of the note I just entered. I have to navigate all the way back to change anything I just inputted.

It does not seem to be a problem if I don’t use pitch before duration.

Any settings I can change to make sure it always highlights the note I just added?

Second screenshot is here. I’m a new user so I’m not allowed to use two screenshots in a row to illustrate issues. :man_facepalming:t2:

Welcome to the forum, @wbl. This is happening because when you are inputting using pitch before duration input and have Specify accidental, rhythm dot and articulations set to Before inputting note, Dorico doesn’t select the note/chord you input, which means that when you hit Shift+N again to restart note input, Dorico doesn’t know where you expect note input to start, and it falls back on showing the caret in the first visible bar at the top of the screen.

I’m not sure what we will do about this, but I’ll think about it. My instinct is that we could proactively select something at the caret’s position when you leave note input, but I’ll discuss with other members of the team.

If you’re coming from Finale, then pitch before duration may be more familiar, but there’s no specific advantage to it in Dorico over the other way round, (other than the ability to ‘noodle’ on the keyboard without having those notes splurged onto your page…!)

Thanks! Would it be possible to select the last entered/modified note? This will be in-line with the behavior without using pitch before duration and allow for quick adjustment between input sessions.

I’m significantly faster with arrow keys and numbers vs. selecting notes by their names. I used to type note names in Finale as well, before realizing speedy mode works better for me. I did try to go back to typing when switching here but here’s an old dog very slow to learn new tricks…

As I said, that’s my instinct, but I need to think about it to make sure this wouldn’t have any other undesirable effects.

FWIW, I made this request a while back, so seeing it implemented would be great!

I’d definitely advise getting a MIDI keyboard. Even a little one, like the Akai LPK25, which is really cheap, makes note entry so much faster.
