Legality of reverse-engineering the Cubase proprietary file formats

Hi,

I’m interested in reverse-engineering the Logical Editor / Project Logical editor binary file format presets (and to some extent the .cpr project file format) for the purposes of integrating my setup more tightly with AutoHotkey.

What is the legality surrounding the potential sharing of this work? I’m not talking about any of the program code or executables. Purely the proprietary binary file formats. Supposedly in the EU (where Steinberg is based) it is specifically permitted (article 6 EU software convention) to “reverse engineer file formats for the purpose of interoperability”, which is exactly what I’m doing.

Can anyone chime in?

Thanks,

Max
