Legato and Vibrato in Cubasis

Hi Lars,

When is Legato going to be implemented in Cubasis? This is sorely missing while Glide exists in Micrologue.

Also, the Pitch mode on GarageBand Keyboard to play Vibrato is the most optimal implementation so we could record vibrato simultaneously and dynamically while playing (on-demand and not mechanically) and Apple NAILED it! Please offer Vibrato on swiping up the keys similar to how GB offers - so this feature could also be used to play with built-in instruments and also any AUs (similar to how iFretless can play SampleTank instruments expressively).

These features would let us play expressively. Hope Steinberg realizes the value these features add to Cubasis and prioritizes them on the top.

Thank you!

Shekar

Also, please take a look at NOTE FONT in GeoShred Settings that displays notes in various languages. This is a SLICK marketing feature.

Display notes on each key or only octave keys (default) optionally as a config setting (see FM Player or Synth One settings). This is an educational feature.

These features - plus Legato & Vibrato - would quickly entice an EXTRA 3rd of the world’s iOS music users (India, China, Korea, Australia, Japan, etc) to purchase Cubasis.

Small features - BIG BANG!!

Lars,

Asian countries use mostly Animoog, GeoShred, GeoSynth, ThumbJam, BeBot, etc. for these features.

Also, if you offer a feature to render Legato, Glide, Vibrato (swiping up on keys) on each track - even if it is an external synth/AU/IAA app - this will FILL the gap that most other apps lack on legato, glide and vibrato - it would be a game changer! Only a handful of apps offer legato - SM1, Poison, FLSM, Kauldron, Zeeon, Animoog, GeoShred, etc and most don’t offer Vibrato by swiping up on keys except GB, Animoog , Geo apps and SM1.

Vibrato by swiping up on keys may be made as a configurable option under Cubasis Setup to render either Vibrato or Velocity so the current functionality of velocity on keys is not lost. Please see SM1’s configurable Settings > Keyboard > X and Y Axis Settings that are highly optimal and scalable. I requested the dev to add a Vibrato to Y Axis dropdown (but Vibrato can be rendered currently by adding a mod using after touch).

Even GarageBand has Note Labels now - available under iOS Settings > GarageBand > turn ON switch and relaunch GB to see note labels (single language). These labels are implemented well and offer a huge educational value with flats/sharps displayed on black keys. However, Note Fonts in GeoShred are more powerful displayed in many languages.

Hi Lars,

Forgot to mention this - please implement Micro-Tones / Quarter-Tones inside Cubasis and its Piano Roll (see ScaleGen and Gestrument apps from the same developer). This would enable us to produce subtle Vibratos (not full semitones) with Legatos for expressive and accurate playing. This would be an attractive feature too for Asian musicians and would be another attraction to entice them to buy Cubasis.

I guess implementing Note-Lanes between each semitone in Piano Roll is not an huge task - now that Steinberg has acquired Music Studio’s IP. While recording, it could record to semitones/whole-notes as usual. You could implement a Micro-Tone module (similar to Note Repeat module) with 6 buttons to hold while playing a note that would generate micro-tone of the currently pressed note with these frequencies (compared to the current note’s usual frequency):

  • Button 1: 25% frequency down

  • Button 2: 50% frequency down

  • Button 3: 75% frequency down

  • Button 4: 25% frequency up

  • Button 5: 50% frequency up

  • Button 6: 75% frequency up

It should be possible to edit recorded MIDI notes and change their micro-frequencies to chromatic semitones/whole-notes or micro-tones.

I’ve tried fine-tuning the instrument’s Cents frequency down by 25%, 50% and 75% on 3 separate tracks so a next/previous semitone would generate micro tones between it and the current note of the original instrument when the tweaked instruments are assigned to separate tracks. Here is my setup:

  • Track 1: Original instrument

  • Track 2: Tweaked instrument with 25% fine tuning

  • Track 3: Tweaked instrument with 50% fine tuning

  • Track 4: Tweaked instrument with 75% fine tuning

It is generating micro-tones with the above; however, legato is not working with overlapping MIDI notes across tracks (like it does with overlapping MIDI notes on the same track) - it is producing staccato cross-track.

Thanks!
Shekar

Or, at least make Legato work with overlapping MIDI notes placed on SEPARATE tracks (as an option if necessary).

Or, preferably, offer the micro Tuner insert effect from Cubase in Cubasis as an Internal effect which would be a graceful solution:

Shekar

In addition to having a micro Tuner, Micro-Tone Lanes, adding Pitch Bend data track to Automation inspector is a very graceful solution. It should be similar to the Pan Automation data track - with bend range derived from the synth’s settings (Default: 2 semitones if setting is not available - say, from an AU) and semitones are separated by 3 unit markings on the scale (25%, 50%, 75%) where we can Draw automation to bend pitch with ADSR kind of behavior.

I’ve checked the Automation inspector and it doesn’t have Pitch Bend data track included as of Cubasis v2.6. Please add Pitch Bend data track under Automation.

Also, when we record a MIDI note with Pitch Bend and later edit or move the note to a different location, Pitch Bend data value is lost! Apparently, the location of the PB data is not moved/sync’ed to the new location of the note. Glitch?
