Let Users Choose Paths and Content

It was clear I understood you, maybe because I am also French hahaha
Sorry about your issues with Cubase, I don’t use VST Connect so I don’t know about it.
For the rest, sometimes it can also be Windows issues.

Anyway yes we love Cubase, 20+ years for me!
I’m not always complaining, for example I truly LOVED when they brought the VST Instrument track. All those improvements make Cubase a joy to work with. Need more

I have a folder NOT on the C drive where I save my Cubase settings, FX chains, etc…
You can export your preferences with the Profile Manager. Worth doing once or twice a year to keep that safe in case of reinstall.
And yesterday I did a full backup of all of that and my music work on the cloud on Google Drive, FreeFileSync is a free backup software. Worth doing for peace of mind !

VST Instrument Tracks, could use multi-output support as well as not having to have defined MIDI channels for controllers but on your last point, the problem with preferences is it is an all-or-nothing proposition, in that you can’t pick and choose what stays, prior to deleting them and re-initializing the program.

Back to the paths topic.
Here is an example of a plugin that lets users choose the location for the data :
The new Zebralette 3 !

It means if you pick your data drive with your libraries, samples, presets etc… then your vst presets are there with all your sounds for easy backup and recovery in case of OS crash or reinstall.

PS Zebralette 3 Beta is out and is quite a beast !

Good idea, I’ll check and let you kno.

Fwiw, prior users of Acronis (I’m on Acronis True Image 18) now get the option of going back to perpetual. Maybe subscription scheme is not going so well for Acronis?

But it’s expensive. iirc, $60 for one device. I still use Acronis for my C drive, but honestly, for the most part, I’m glad it ditched True Image. I now use SyncBackPro and that works wonderful for how I use it.

Hi Greg, yes it’s a bit expensive and I think generally subscription models aren’t worth the money long-term.
I looked at SyncBackPro, looks good and glad it works for you.
For those who want to do backup for free, FreeFileSync is a very capable software, can also back up to Google Drive, free 15GB iirc.
I like free software when they’re really good, eg TDR, Analog Obsession, Deelay, etc…

I use Backblaze for the desktop stuff to the cloud, along with the normal iCloud backup and a redundant Time Machine backup. If I’m going to pay a subscription (Backblaze is monthly/yearly), then I better get storage with it. Only catch I hit with BackBlaze is, it won’t do networked drives so I had to buy a second ā€˜business’ account to back that up, but it works with the QNAP’s own software and keeps things nice and safe.

In WaveLab you can choose a location for the preferences, if you want. Stressfree when working on two machines. Simple as that.
Would be nice in Cubase including the MediaBay-Database. Fixed locations and absolute paths are outdated. Working on different OS multiplies the chaos.

Fully understand and agree Elias, let’s hope @Steinberg is listening, this shouldn’t be that complicated to add and it shouldn’t bother those who like the defaults.

I have no idea about Windows, since I’ve only ever used Macs, but on the Mac most of these filtering options you describe are available in Cubase and I’ve made good use of them myself to have a very personalized experience, that I’m certain is vastly different than your preferences. However, certain items can only be stored within System folders on the boot drive, and I don’t think there will ever be a way around that.
